Hey Su, I was wondering about something after reading the character ask you answered for Naruto. You mentioned feeling dissatisfied with how he turned out, because before he was against the system, but did nothing when he became hokage. Do you think that's intentional on Kishimoto's part, or do you think such a contradiction is a bit of a slip or "laziness" as an author? Sometimes I notice authors leave "loose ends" or they can be unreasonably inconsistent with characterization. Thanks <3

Kishimoto suddenly chose to settle for the lawful endurance role after following the anti-establishment trope. And till this day, I don’t know why. The contradictions we are speaking of here are not minor because how can you start out with a story that promotes a leftist-leaning and almost anarchist-like approach on the ninja system and suddenly decide to preach the very system that the main character(s) commented negatively on? Either Kishimoto is tremendously lazy or his editors forced him to change the ending.

12. Which story of yours do you like best? Why?

Oohh… So for fanfiction, I think I’d have to say The Young King, primarily because 1) it’s the longest fic I’ve written in the past like… 6 years and 2) I really like the AU and it’s been really fun to craft the plot and assign the characters roles!!!

For original fiction… I think I’d have to say this short piece I wrote about scavenger children who encounter a skull on a beach. It was kind of an absurdist piece, absolutely reminiscent of Gabriel Garcia Marquez (though I wrote the first draft before ever reading his work), and it’s just really fun and quirky.

29. Is writing more of a hobby or do you write with the intention of getting published?

Well, I’m in my senior year of college, and in May (provided I complete all the requirements…) I’ll graduate with a degree in English with concentrations in literature and creative writing. So ultimately, I do aspire to get published someday! I’ve been aiming for that since middle school, and I like to think my writing has improved since then xD But at the same time, I truly enjoy writing, and it’s one of my favorite activities (though it also causes me GREAT frustration at times).

38. How do you nail voice in your books works?

Oh jeez that’s tough. I think a lot of my writing voice simply comes from the fact that I’ve been developing it for the past… nine or so years? I learn a lot through mimesis, so when I read more (several years ago…) I definitely grabbed onto certain elements of writers I liked. I think my writing style and voice now is still reflective of what I like, but my priorities in description and uniqueness really do shape my writing. I also strive for variety. Repeating words (aside from articles like “the” and other basic words) is one of my biggest pet peeves in my own writing, so I usually avoid it as much as possible, which has forced me to adapt in such a way that I learn new words to incorporate them, and my stories progress so that I don’t repeat words xD I don’t… actually know if this answered the question since I mostly talked about style, but that’s certainly related!!

Hey, your art is amazing. I'm so grateful that my girlfriend recommended you to me! I wanted to ask, what recommendations do you have for mastering anatomy and facial proportions? I know you mentioned gesture drawing in a similar ask, anything else?

Take a look at Andrew Loomis’ books, they’re really good, and IMO easy to understand.

Other than books and actual classes, try drawing from life; if you can’t, movie/series stills. Don’t draw from animated stuff/comic books because most likely those are stylized already.

Hey, let me just say how wonderful your argumentation and critical thinking is. It's a rare gem to see someone reason through claims on here! You're awesome <3 I have two questions. 1) Were you ever in HS/collegiate debate? 2) Favorite philosopher?

Hey.:) Thank you very much, that means a lot to me.

1) No, as far as I know, we don’t have that in my country, but I would’ve loved to participate. I was introduced to the art of debating almost half a year ago by a good friend of mine. However, I’m involved in psychology and politics, so this helped me as well, I suppose. 

2) I don’t have many. You’d probably get a far more detailed answer by asking me who my favourite psychologists and psychiatrists are, but I like Arthur Schopenhauer, Karl Marx, and Siddhartha Gautama. What about you?
