I hate it when people go from one extreme to another: either idealizing kurt, turning a blind eye to his questionable traits and actions, or demonizing him out of some incomprehensible hostility, writing him off because of the qualities of an average ill and addicted person. there are no ideal people, just like there are no absolute freaks [politicians and such don't count--].
kurt wasn't a saint and an angel, or, on the contrary, a complete asshole. he was just a guy with his own quirks and troubles, just like the rest of us. it's surprising that many people don't understand this. as if he were an entertaining buffoon, not a human being. people argue about what was on his mind, and argue about the correctness of the actions of a man who died 31 years ago, probably wanting only one thing: to disappear and find peace.
an artistic genius, an icon of his time, the voice of a generation, and other labels that he didn't like, but also a simple guy who had a lot of anger, hatred, weirdness and sadness. an empathetic sensitive soul and a controversial cynical bastard. a guy who needed help and a better environment, but perhaps it was too late to help him, if he wanted this help at all [which is most likely true but it's still controversial considering how he tried to call pat and courtney a few days before his suicide and many other facts].
I don't know. and I personally never knew and couldn't know him.
but I do know one thing: it's time for people to leave him alone already, instead of trying to denigrate him or make him a saint. and many other things that are disrespectful towards him and his legacy [yes, idealizing him is also disrespectful, treat him like a fucking person, not like a perfect doll]. he did and said many good, kind and significant things as well as quite many bad, rude and weird ones. oh, god forbid an ordinary mentally ill person having their merits and flaws [some of his actions couldn't really be justified tho but can be explained].
in my opinion, he was far from a bad person, but does that mean he didn't do any bad things? no, of course not. but again, none of us are perfect and we all make mistakes, especially when we're young. this guy was still a kid in some senses, you really don't know anything in your 20s [his quote].
you know, it's better to just be grateful to him for his art, his understanding through music and his unique personality, since he still causes such heated debates and discussions among y'all.
just treat him like a person, like a human being and not your entertaining puppet boy.
and in the end of day I still love him more than anything and we'll never have another person and artist like him
