‘Minority Report’ Predicts Our Future

Minority Report is the new Fox show adapted from the 2002 Steven Spielberg movie. It premiered Monday, and as Yahoo TV critic-at-large Ken Tucker put it, it’s “alternately bad and laughably bad.”

One thing the show did was give a glimpse at their half-baked vision of the future. One line said by Lara Vega, played by Meagan Good, was, “Mmm, french fries ... Can you believe these used to be unhealthy? Thank God for the genetic revolution.”

There were a lot of little visuals where we got further hints of what the future looks like. The Nationals win a World Series, marijuana ads annoy us, kids take selfies via drones, and The Simpsons has reached Season 75.

There was a not-so-subtle nod to 2015 when Vega’s mother says, “When I was your age we had this thing called Tinder. ... What? It’s how I met your father.” Apparently the music stars of today become oldies in the future; Vega plays Iggy Azalea on vinyl.

The only thing that doesn’t seem to change in this future is the treatment of women. In the grand tradition of lousy network drama, Fox made sure to put its beautiful lead actress in as many revealing outfits as possible.

Comic-Con: 'Minority Report' Stars Invent Show's Theme Song

The cast of the Fox sci-fi series Minority Report must have consulted with a future-predicting precog before sitting down for their Yahoo TV Comic-Con interview. Because after being challenged to invent a theme song for their action-packed show, based on the 2002 Steven Spielberg/Tom Cruise blockbuster, they didn’t miss a beat. 

Stark Sands, who plays precog Dash, laid down a beat that his co-stars, Laura Regan and Wilmer Valderrama, sang impromptu lyrics over. Despite their impressive efforts, we predict that Fox will probably not use this tune as the show’s actual theme.

Valderrama also discussed what it was like to throw up Cruise’s famous “gang signs” — a byproduct of manipulating holograms in the air — as his character, Will Blake, a detective who works alongside a crime-solving team that includes Dash, Nick Zano as Arthur, and Meagan Good as Laura Vega. Because in the future, those hand gestures are a good way for cops to solve crimes… and look cool while doing it.

In the below video, the cast puts their soothsaying powers to the test to predict what Comic-Con will look like in the year 2065, the same year that the show takes place and a whole fifteen years after the events of the film. “I think that the fans are going to be able to walk the floor from the comfort of their own home,” Valderrama says. For his part, Sands already knows who the headliners are going to be: “Superman, Batman, Spider-Man.” And Regan followed that up by semi-accidentally teasing a small spoiler from the series: The Simpsons will still be on the air in 2065, and can be glimpsed celebrating its 75th anniversary in the background of a shot in the Minority Report pilot. “I’m OK in a world where The Simpsons is still on TV in 2065,” Sands says. That’s a future we can all be proud of.   

Minority Report premieres Sept. 21 at 9 p.m. on Fox.

The Virginia Tech Tragedy screams "Wake Up"

The [tag]Virginia Tech Massacre[/tag] is a tragedy that exposes some of the real failings of the state of our society today. A day after the [tag]deadliest shooting spree[/tag] in US history, it is all people are talking about it. Yet with all the talk, are the real questions being asked? The desensitization of our society is so extreme, that it takes the killing of "innocent" students on a suburban campus to get us talking about violence. The hundreds dying daily in Iraq, the thousands being killed in Darfur and other African nations, none of that serves to remind us that we have a problem with violence? In a time when the US Army is putting weapons in the hands of criminals because of low army enrollment, what kind of society can we expect, if not one where people believe that they are entitled to take a gun into their hands? And why is no one talking about the real issue - the lack of effective [tag]gun control laws[/tag]? If this country was not so obsessed with violence and guns, it would not make it so easy for a student who is barely allowed to get into bars to get their hands on the kind of weapon that allows a lone gunman to mow down 30 people before getting stopped. I have heard a parade of psychiatrists talking about what could have motivated this killer, and what should have been detected. But the fact is that no amount of effort will allow us to get into the heads of people (do we want to live in a '[tag]Minority Report[/tag]' society?). What I want to hear is a concrete plan that will prevent people from getting their hands on guns so easily. I don't care how many crazies there are in the world; if they can't get their hands of an [tag]assault weapon[/tag], they won't be able to do this much damage. And everyone is so quick to jump to conclusions and cures. I just heard Jeanine Pirro say that the National Guard, the ATF and the FBI should have been involved as soon as the first set of killings were identified. On what basis? Two people killed in a room in what looked like a domestic dispute? If you mobilize the army every time there is a domestic dispute, the army would be constantly roaming the streets of our largest cities. And what National Guard anyway? Aren't they all in Iraq thanks to our bumbling leaders? My heart bleeds, and all I hear is talk...

私たちは、ユーザーフレンドリーなインターフェイスをデザインし、それを実現するためにマルチタッチな環境を開発しました。マルチタッチスクリーン、鏡、 高性能なカメラを駆使してカスタムメイドしたんです。ちなみに、これを開発する時にはマイノリティー・レポートでトムクルーズが携帯のセールスマンになる ことをイメージしたんですよ！

このシステムは、マルチタッチスクリーンを使用することによって、スムーズに販売員とお客さんがコミュニケーションしながら、ディスプレー上で適切 な商品を提案していくことが出来るんです。製品についての説明、色のバリエーション、毎月の基本料金情報などをスクリーンにドラッグして表示させ、お客さ んが納得して購入すると決めたら、カートに商品をドラッグしていきます。これら全部を指で作業することができるんです。この経験は、分かりやすく、個人的 であると同時に、非常に洗練されていて技術的にもかなり高度なものです。

確かに、これなら質問があればリアルタイムで答えてくれるし、要望にあった商品を提案してくれるから、家の椅子に座りながらコンシェルジュ付きでお買いもの出来るってかんじで良いのかもしれないですね。それに、お買いものだけじゃなく、カスタマーサポートで使えば、電話よりも効率的に問題が解決できそうですよね？...

- テクノロジーとしては最新式だが既存技術化したものだし、ブロードバンドが確立していてパソコンが身近にあるというなら、こうしたカスタマーサービスが出現しなかったことのほうが不思議だ。エレクトリックコマース分野よりも、オンコールでパソコンの不具合をしてもらったり、アプリケーションのレクチャーを受ける、といったサービスの方がより適しているのではないか？ここまで考えて、実際に応対する人の苦労も考えてしまったが、AIとVR&ARでも実現可能なんでは？ (via GIZMODO)
