In honor of Black History Month, we remember John Dabney. A talented bartender who mixed and served his famous Mint Juleps at Sweet Springs when it was a resort. Reporters from Lexington, Kentucky that visited the Sweet Springs resort years later claimed, “The julep a la Dabney is a world-wide art bestowed upon personages whom he holds in high esteem. They are prepared in a sterling silver goblet 14 inches high and imbibed through solid silver straws.” “One of John Dabney’s gigs was at a high-society resort called Sweet Springs, a vacation haven for Confederate giants like Robert E. Lee. John’s juleps and charisma eventually did bring him recognition.
