I'll add that Windows users can do accented letters if they have a numpad on their keyboard (as long as Num Lock is turned ON): Hold down the left Alt, punch out the 4-number code for the letter on the numpad, and release Alt. You can get the 4-number codes from the Character Map program to start with; select the letter you want and it'll appear in the status bar in the bottom right as "Keystroke: Alt+xxxx". (e.g. É is Alt+0201) I used these so often for French class in grade school that I still have most of them memorized lol. They're also in alphabetical/accent order, so if you go just one number up, you can get the next letter in the sequence. è = 0232, é = 0233, ê = 0234, etc.
