i want to respond to your post(s) about how white a lot of butch & femme stuff is. maybe i'm being at best an annoying or at worst a racist white by saying this, i hope it will be better. in any case, i hope i will know more each day. i'm not from the usa. i live in central europe. i am part central european, part balkan, part mediterranean. i might be called white by cultures where this is a term, but still today and definetly in the past, i sure am/ would not be considered a pure-bred white. today people say i look white, 30 years ago probably not so much. but i personally am also very annoyed by how usa-focused our local queer discourse is. a lot of contemporary queer activists and communities exist chronically online, just like elsewhere, and due to how dominant the usa is online, we started adapting the culture. sometimes it feels like what gender performances and human identities are associated with, for example, the labels "butch" and "femme" just are not able to describe the multinational, multiracial, multiethnic european experiences, and are just so culturally usa-tied. and i think, if anything, we ought to find our own terms (i am not saying that you need to do this too), each language, each region. a lot of those that used to exist were lost due to 20th century facism. but i do think, i can somewhat understand the experience of seeing queer identities described and just going: "yeah this is not about my people". (and with my people i just mean anyone that lives here, not whites.) seems in both our cases this has to do with facism, one way or another.

first off, thank you for sharing your experiences!! We need more voices from butchfemmes who don't fit the standard

using butchfemme is DEFINITELY not cultural appropriation. American culture is so heavily pushed onto communities worldwide, it is physically impossible to "appropriate" American culture (unless it's Native American culture)

For me, I DO feel represented by butchfemme culture and I DO feel like the term fits me perfectly, I just get upset sometimes because I feel like I'm not WELCOMED sometimes. Like, imagine you have a house that's shared with other people, and then some guys who also live there make it seem like it's not your house even though it is

I've had femmes and butches both insinuate that there's only a few "correct" ways to be butch and all of those are white and eurocentric versions / ideals. I have been DIRECTLY invalidated in my butch identity by white butchfemmes who do not consider my masculinity to be "enough". I have been told TO MY FACE that I should probably be calling myself "masc" or "futch" or "androgynous" instead because I don't fit the western masculinity standards.

I don't WANT a new term. I want to be more accepted in the place where I already belong

My issue has never been with "butch" and "femme" themselves as words OR communities. It's always been with white butchfemmes and their insistence to isolate POC from the community

do you think the Asian community would benefit from their own "version" of the term butch/stud, meant for masc Asians to define their own masculinity?

I don't speak for all asians, but imo I think there should just be more effort made to accept all different kinds of masculinity within butchness, not just the eurocentric ideal. My issue isn't that there is a stereotype, my issue is that there is a lack of acceptance for those who do not MEET that stereotype

I'm not really sure how much an "asian version" of butch would work out, especially since it's such a big continent with such varying cultures. Like yeah, culturally I as a south asian definitely have a lot more in common with like east asians than latam people, but that doesn't mean we're a unified front. If an asian person wants to coin one for themselves, they can go for it. But that doesn't really solve the issue in itself

it irritates me so much as an Asian butch how white-focused butchfemme communities are and can be. God forbid I don't like your western aesthetic. Masculinity is so different in my culture compared to the west... in the west I'd be considered very androgynous or maybe even a bit feminine but where I'm from what I'm doing is crazy rebellion against gender norms. I've had femmes and even other butches try and place me in western butch culture boxes and it fucking sucks man
