every time I remember how sj maas tried to write feyre's thoughts on painting I just don't know whether to laugh or once again shake my head at how mediocre of a writer she is like, 

painters don't automatically know what they're gonna paint and what they're gonna title it. Nor do they title it that flowery bullshit that maas picked out. If maas had done any research whatsoever into the artistic process, feyre would've been thinking about composition, color choices, value, medium, and all the other things painters think about when approaching their work. 

I don't see something and go "I'm going to paint that and call it [insert romantic nonsense here]"; I take my inspiration from how colors might interact with light in a certain setting, and how that makes me feel, and how I might replicate that feeling visually. That's by no means how /every/ painter does it, but ask anyone who's actually done art seriously and they'll tell you that creating art is inspiration, execution, evolution, and problem-solving sprinkled throughout. 

Where was feyre's background in art? Because she sure as hell wouldn't have been as good as everyone said she was if she hadn't had any training. Maas describes feyre's work as illustrative and representative, so one should assume that feyre would have had classical training. That means long, long hours in the studio, doing still lifes and figurative work in charcoal, pastels, and eventually oils. Once she got a grasp on converting the 3D into the 2D, then she would have been instructed to paint landscapes, portraits, historical paintings. 

feyre describes becoming impoverished when she was young, so she wouldn’t have had that much time on her hands to get to that point. Yet maas has her painting fully rendered scenes that are obviously good enough to impress immortal fairies. Where were feyre’s inner considerations of underpaintings? of color mixing? of scumbling? of trying to pick out mediums to thin her paint with?

that brings me to another gripe, maas’ treatment of paint. she mentions that feyre once spent what little money she had on “the essentials,” red, yellow, and blue. if maas had done any research whatsoever, she would have known that white is also an essential. as is an umber or a sienna, if feyre wanted to conserve her paint--the latter two would have let her desaturate her colors without requiring her to mix more primaries together. (i don’t think she ever actually specifies what type of paint feyre uses, so for all i know it could have been tempera or acrylic--but we know next to absolutely nothing about the world that acotar/acomaf/acowar is set in, so obviously we know nothing about the evolution or traditions of art in that world. so that establishes fuck-all about feyre’s skills.)

tl;dr maas does absolutely no research whatsoever and seems like the kind of person who would ask an artist for art for free, because “it’s great exposure :)”
