GISH is over and we've been given the go ahead to share our stuff publicly ...
On January 1, 2017 I started taking a selfie-per-day. I had been injured and was on the verge of my second major breakdown.
The selfies helped me at first to track my recovery and later the project developed into something so much more. As a way of helping me to take control of my story, of my personal narrative, after decades of being told who I was and who I should be. I did miss some days but was faithful for the most part.
The base photo is from this week on a day when I truly felt comfortable in my own skin - after some personal realisations. Those realisations came in part from the project. Because I wasn't just taking selfies.
Over time I learned about lighting, position, I started playing with the artistic side, branched out further into working on my make-up and costuming etc. It had a knock-on effect.
And so I made some very important discoveries about myself. And so I took that and used it for one of the GISH items (re: narrative of photography).
This photo contains 300 selfies from my project (the good days, the bady days, and the days that I was in hell), and one photo that while not a selfie does highlight a specific point in my recovery.
I had always planned to do something like this anyway - and will still do something a bit more involved later ... but I'm happy with this.
