This was bound to happen eventually. Really, it's a wonder Kai has even managed to get away with this for so long. He's just been lucky up to this point.

And now he's just. Well.

Of course Ji-Wan is enjoying this. Fucker. Kai is a mess right now – both emotionally and, like, physically. It's like the fox knew this was going to happen, because Kai is covered in hickeys and bite marks that trail down his neck to fan across his collarbones and dip further down his chest and ribs. If it weren't obvious enough that Kai was fucking the kumiho just by the fact that he's in the witch's room, the evidence marked over his body serves as further proof.

At least he isn't naked. He scrambles out of bed in a bit of a panic because he has absolutely no idea how to handle this. It would be one thing if he'd told Yeong straight up, even accidentally let it slip in conversation. But to be caught literally in bed with Ji-Wan is a disaster he's really not equipped to figure out.

This is all his fault – he deserves this.

The least he can do is keep Yeong from doing something stupid. Because Kai isn't worried about Ji-Wan, and he's not concerned with his own safety either ( whatever Yeong does, he has it coming ) . No, the witch is worried the hunter is gonna get himself killed here.

So he pulls Ji-Wan back from the door and steps in front of him. Not to intimidate but just ... to put himself between them. Because if either of them get hurt because of this Kai's pretty sure he'll never forgive himself. But his own wellbeing? That's fine ; he had this coming anyway. He's expendable.

His voice is quiet and he can't look Yeong in the eye when he says, ❝ You should probably just go. ❞

What could Kai possibly say? ❛ I'm sorry ❜ is a joke, even if it's true. ❛ I'm sorry ❜ is a bandaid on a bullet hole, antiseptic paste smeared over the viscera that the witch left in his wake.

❛ I still love you ❜ is ... it's also true, but what does that help? He can't go back – no, not can't ; won't. Because even if he loves Ji-Wan, even if leaving is a wound that he'll carry on the shell of his own heart for the rest of his life, he's already hurt Yeong enough by starting this mess in the first place. Because even though he doesn't think he'll ever stop loving the kumiho, Kai loves Yeong more.

But the thing is that the witch didn't think that Ji-Wan really cared. No, that's a lie – even through his own insecurities, it would be a disservice to the fox to say that he didn't know that he cared. It's just that Kai didn't think it went this far, would never have guessed that it was really love. The realisation is a widening of his own wound at leaving – claws that dig into the sides and pull the seams apart, ripping the tender scar open so that it bleeds fresh and raw all over again.

The other thing on Kai's mind, though, is that Ji-Wan is dangerous. He doesn't think his ex will hurt him ( is sort of banking on it right now, actually ) , but he knows that same sentimentality doesn't extend to Yeong. Probably the opposite, if the kumiho knew the specifics of why Kai left him.

Kai swallows, jaw tight even as tears gather along his lashline. ❝ I couldn't make excuses for you anymore. ❞
