Research

Once my interviewee had been chosen I could go about researching the relevant terminology to use in my interview and the questions that I thought would benefit the audience as a listener. Gathering thorough research about that particular topic for interview is important so that you can perform the interview and are fully aware as to what is going on. It also helps the interviewer to conduct the best possible interview with the most amount of information to make it as beneficial as can be. There is no point going into an interview blind as then the interview will not be to the same standard and the relevant information may not be obtained. Having Golf as the topic of my interview was ideal as this is a sport that I am interested in and have good knowledge.

Idea Generation

The possible people I thought of interviewing were through my interests and people who I thought would be interesting. Golf is a very well known and popular sport all over the world that has a wide following. Films are are all the time and a career that I would like to go into so I thought as well as being interesting this would be beneficial for me to get to know the journeys of how they got to where they were today. When generating idea, another thought was the practicality of being able to interview these people. Harry, being my brother was easy as we live together. Alfie lives in London so this was easy to commute to. Gabe was the Director on a film that I did work experience on so could speak to him when the shoot was completed.

Interviewee Profiles

Name: Harry Knight

Age: 15

Occupation: Student who has high aspirations for a career in golf

Significance: Golf is a well known sport that is played around the world and something that I enjoy. Not everyone realises how much practise and dedication goes into golf so this is what I wanted to show in this interview.

Name: Alfie Oldman

Age: 24

Occupation: Works within the film industry

Significance: With having an interest in working in the film industry myself I thought it would be interested to find out from someone who has worked in the industry for a while what it was like. Alfie's parents are also the well known actors Gary Oldman and Lesley Manville so I wanted to find out how he coped with this as a child going to school and if his parents had any influence on his career choice. 

Name: Gabe Turner

Age: 40

Occupation: Film Director

Significance: Gabe was the director on a film I have just done work Experience on called 'Meet The Guvnors' and I wanted to ask him how he thought the experience on the film set had gone and how he got to where he is today as a Director is something I aspire to be in the future.

Evaluation

Unfortunately the original interview I wanted to record become too complex to be able to perform with finding time with the interviewee and the travel arrangements so I referred to my back up plan, my brother Harry Knight on his aspiring golf career. Through this interview I wanted to achieve my aim of gathering information about how he started playing, how he improves and his aspirations. In this interview I tried to use a range of open and closed questions that I thought flowed well. An open questions is when of the W's or H is involved; these consist of Who, What, Where, When, Why or How. A closed question is when the answer can only be either yes or no. A problem i found with this interview was that Harry did not expand on some of the questions as much as I would have hoped however this was good practise for me to think on my feet to create some follow up questions to reveal more information. I was pleased with my interview, although listening back I realised how I could have asked more questions to expand the depth of this interview, for example I would have asked if golf interfered with his school work at all or how he coped through the different months and seasons. Luckily being interested in the game of golf myself I have good knowledge and know the relevant terminology, but it also shows how important it is to do thorough research to be able to perform an interview so you can understand what is going on and the correct questions can be asked.
