Lightroom Tip: Fixed Drive Letter for External Drive
Ever had this problem in Lightroom? Say you store your photos in an external drive. For some reason you remove that drive. Subsequently, you reconnect the external drive. You find that the external drive's letter has changed (let's say from F: to H:). Lightroom now cannot find the photos. That happened to me as I was transferring photos from my netbook to my main laptop. Reconnecting the catalog with the photos was also a royal pain. Fortunately, I found out that it's possible to fix the drive letter assignment for the external drive. This will not only reconnect the catalog with the photos, but will fix the drive letter to avoid similar issues in the future. Note: These instructions apply to Windows Vista. Steps:
Note which drive letter Lightroom is reading your photos from. If you're not sure, find any "missing photo" then on grid view, click on the small question mark on the upper right of the photo. In the popup dialog box, you'll see at least part of the path that Lightroom is using for your photos, including the drive letter.
Close Lightroom and any apps that are using the external drive. Better yet, exit all apps.
Eject and disconnect any devices that are using the drive letter for your photos. Leave the external drive connected.
In Windows Explorer, right-click on Computer or My Computer.
Choose "Manage"
On the screen that appears, see the leftmost column and click on "Disk Management" under "Storage".
In the middle column, right click on the external drive and choose "Change Drive Letter and Paths"
In the next dialog box, click on the button "Change..." then select the drive letter that Lightroom was using for your photos (see step 1 above).
You'll get a warning from Windows that doing this may cause programs not to run correctly. Just click "Yes."
To be safe, reboot.
The next time you run Lightroom, it should again be able to find your photos. Resource: http://www.practicalpc.co.uk/computing/vista/fixing-drive-letter-assignments.htm
Hey tumblr followers,
On Saturday May 16th, my dear friend’s car window was smashed and her family’s camera was stolen. The worst part is that she just graduated with her MFA after a very difficult two years and her family had all come out for her graduation and a family road trip they had been looking forward to for a long time (especially with saving up for hotel rooms and taking vacation days!).
As you might guess, my friend and her family don’t even want the camera back, but they are desperately hoping the photos still exist somewhere. The memory card was not left behind, and all their graduation photos and family vacation photos are gone. Thousands of dollars and years of blood, sweat and tears (no exaggeration)* and all they want are their photos back.
If anyone out there knows anything at all about a stolen camera’s photos from May 16th near Mel’s Drive-in on Geary Street in San Francisco, can you please let me know (queerwings.tumblr.com/ask) or signal boost this so that my friend and her family can have something back to keep their happy memories alive? Again, we are only asking for the photos to be returned.
*There are so many worse things happening right now and in a lot of respects it is lucky that this is the most devastating thing happening to this family at the moment, but if you could please please help, all they are asking for is for someone to find it in their hearts to return their photos. They really have gone through so much to see this happen. My friend thrived and survived against all odds (class, race, health, harassment, you name it) and her family made it out to see it, and now that tangible evidence is gone right on the tails of her graduation. I am so incredibly proud of her, and she and her family deserve to remember this time as a happy one.
