Voïvod - Missing Sequences
1989
VOIVOD WEEK: Missing Sequences by Voivod - Well I started the week with Voivod so it stands to reason I should just keep going. It would be easy to have a week dedicated to Metallica or Rolling Stones or Radiohead or some other iconic group, but Voivod? Why not, they basically set the stage for post-metal with a fusion of thrash and progressive sounds that had an enormous influence on the shape of metal heading into the 90's. They were the next illogical progression from the foundation set by King Crimson.
Their Nothingface album is perhaps the greatest achievement by Voivod and the definitive musical tome on progressive metal. The sound of the album is a pretty abrupt departure from their earlier thrash days. There is no center even within songs as the music whipsaws across rhythms and tempos and chord structures. After you are done, you might be liable to get off this ride and think, "what the hell was that"?
Regardless, they make it work. While best known for their Pink Floyd cover of Astronomy Domine, there are some absolute gems on the album like Into My Hypercube, the title track, and my favorite tune Missing Sequences. It has the catchiest chorus and some excellent guitar work before going off on its various tangents. I highly recommend giving this record a spin and revel in all its weird proggy meanderings.
