If we aren’t eating enough food, it doesn’t matter that we’re eating lots of veggies or a big variety of different foods. When we don’t get enough food, our body starts to adapt by using nutrients in different ways. For example, if we don’t eat enough, protein will need to be burned up as energy rather than available for muscle repair/building or making enzymes and hormones. We’re then not using the amino acids, the building blocks of protein, for their intended functions. We also adapt to not enough energy by our basic functions slowing down. Our temperature will decrease or blood pressure may decrease. Our body will save energy by not making new hair and skins cells. When we don’t eat adequately our body goes in to starvation mode and uses the nutrients in the most efficient way possible. When we don’t eat enough food, it doesn’t matter if we have all different foods or are eating fresh, organic food... it just matters that our body isn’t getting the energy it needs to function at its best.
