Remember The Best Friend?
I was debating on writing in chronological order, but forget that. I’m writing what I feel like writing, hahaha.
So, some time between when I moved back from MO to now, one of my really good friends from here and one of my really good friends from MO met each other, and now those two are best friends. Those girls talk all the time and visit each other as much as possible.
Unfortunately, my best MO friend and I are guys. Guys don’t really think about communicating with other people unless it’s a girl they like. Trust me. I mean, we’ve talked online every once in a while. But that’s like, once, maybe twice a year. (This is also true for even some of my best, best friends who have moved away). I’m not sure why, it’s just not a guy thing to do. Guy friendships only thrive when you live near each other. Not to mention my MO friend is and always has been super busy climbing up the Forbes top influential people (but not literally) and has never been one to just sit online for hours.
So I haven’t seen or really kept up communication with my best MO friend in four years. I’ll write a different post about us first running into each other again this past weekend; this post is about when he came to pick me up to actually hang out.
I was just sitting there with the aforementioned girls watching “My Strange Addiction” (apparently, it’s their strange addiction, haha). Best friend knocks on the door, we all exchange pleasantries and stuff. The girls leave for this dreadful girl party, and I start walking to his car. I haven’t seen this guy in years, I didn’t know what car he had, so I just assumed it was the closest one. He laughs at me for walking to the wrong one, then as we walk to his car, we both walk to the passenger seat, until he realizes what he is doing and goes to the driver seat instead. It was my turn to laugh. He tried to defend himself by saying he is so used to opening the door for his fiancée, but that obviously isn’t me. So we’re both cracking up at each others’ stupidity, and then he proceeds to turn the engine on and start Pandora’s Party Rock playlist. Sure, Pandora is limited, but there are a ton of songs, even on just one playlist. It could have been LMFAO, since the playlist is supposed to resemble them after all. Or maybe Pitbull, Black Eyed Peas, Ke$ha, all of which eventually played. But what was the first song that blasts out? “We Found Love” by Rihanna. Best friend and I just start crack up laughing. Everybody knows I’m in love with Rihanna. And everyone knows I think Missouri is a “hopeless place.” We laughed for a good five minutes or so (and that was the only Rihanna song all weekend, other than when I intentionally played her), and the entire trip we could not stop laughing at various other things. I don’t know what, I don’t know how, but you know those people who just somehow things click and you can’t stop laughing? That’s what it was like with him.
It’s funny cuz we were nothing alike in high school. He had a girlfriend (now married to her). I was single (and still am… ;)) He had multiple jobs. I had none (now one). He knew exactly what he wanted in life (and is basically there already). I have no idea what I’m doing. He always smiled. I never did (but I do now so HA). He’s white (hairy). I’m Asian (not hairy). He was bold, social, and interested in economics and politics. I’m none of the above (but in my defense, I’m artistic, scholarly, and funny which he is also but in a lesser degree). Basically he is a 45-65 year old in an 18-year-old’s body. I’m a 5 year old in a 15-year-old’s body. I am confident that if I lived in Missouri all these years, I would still be his best friend. I would have been a groomsman, not just an usher. Honestly, it kind of made me sad when I thought what it would have been like to have him around the past few years (not about the usher thing though, I was freaking ecstatic that I was important enough to even be invited). But you only have one life and can be in one place at a time. Some choices have to be made, and I’m sorry, but my life here is still the perfect choice for me.
I guess there are several lessons I could pull from this, but here are a few. First, just because you are different from someone does not mean that you can’t be good friends with them. Second, good friends should always welcome you back with open arms. Third, cherish the good friendship moments, because life keeps going and eventually they most likely will not be present with you throughout your entire lifetime. That does not mean it’s useless; it just means that them being with you in the present is so much more meaningful.
