“It’s like a jungle sometimes It makes me wonder what keeps me from going under...” I learn a lot about the state of mind of kids in the hood while painting this piece. I’m reminded of how absorbent they are. How they reflect their society around them. How cruel the world around them can be and in turn make them the same. How extremely competitive they are with each other. How they rub each other’s perceived weaknesses in each other’s faces for power “... at least I live with my mommy and daddy, you live with your granny because your parents are on tik...” I’m reminded of how broken some of their homes are. How hard they have it when an adults swore and swung a beating to one for the smallest of things. I’m worried when kids threaten to shoot each other as a standard threat. In all my worry, I do find slight hope when they can still ask questions, like... “uncle, why do they have a forest in their hair ?” or “uncle is it a boy or a girl ?“ (My androgynous character did cause quite a debate 😂). I’m hopeful because I’ve seen a flower grow out of concrete and turn into a jungle. I’m hopeful because I see a glimmer of hope in their eyes, hope for a better now so they can have a better future. But they’re gonna need our help 🖤🙏🏿✊🏿#breezeyokomural #breezeyoko #mitchellsplain #graffiti #graffiticharacter #capetown #capeflats #gettochildren #hope https://www.instagram.com/p/BqDJF2HhAiR/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=g6c70n150960
