Aubrey sat in the middle of her couch, with her hands in her lap, as she anxiously rubbed her thumb against the harsh bone of her wrist, and she glanced at the clock. It was early — too early — it was still blue outside, and it was cold. Beca had gone, she took her records, and she took the fairylights she’d brought with her, and Aubrey was by herself again in a quiet, darkened apartment. She still half expected to hear her singing in the shower, or smell a fresh pot of coffee brewing, but neither happened. She was alone.
