'Bear'ly Good?

In this weird 2020 season the Chicago Bears are 3-0 and now have made the QB switch from Mitch Trubisky to Nick Foles. They're one of the seven teams without a loss but have only one by 12 points against teams that are 1-8. But what does it mean?

As a fan it was the perfect year to run through the 'Mitch Trubisky won the QB competition.' with the lack of attendance and coverage for teams' camps, but it seemed inevitable Foles was going to take the job. Reading between the lines it was obvious Matt Nagy wasn't happy with the QB play or how the offense was running under the former number two pick.

Close games against bad teams would suggest the Bears are, at best, a slightly above average team beating up on bad teams. That may prove to be the case at the end of the season but there have been glimpses, that as a fan, give you hope they can be more consistent and be a good team. The fourth quarter against the Lions they came back from 23-6 to win 27-23; Chicago was up 17-0 at half over the Giants but only won 17-13; and Foles came back from 26-10 in the fourth to win 30-26. In four total quarters through three games Chicago has outscored the other teams 58-0, 41-0 in two fourth quarters.

In a league where Dak Prescott is getting criticized for meaningless stats that haven't added up to wins, getting the W means the stats are worthless right? It's not a fluke to have shut outs in two fourth quarters and a first half and have outscored teams 58-0 in four quarters means there's potential for a dominant team that should make the playoffs.

Teams that start 3-0 have made the playoffs almost 74% of the time since 1990 and now there's another wild card team. Chicago has beaten three of the worst teams in the NFL and left on the schedule are Colts, Bucs, @Panthers, @Rams, Saints, @Titans, Vikings, @Packers, Lions, Texans, @Vikings, @Jaguars, Packers. Panthers, Vikings, Lions, Jaguars seem pretty winnable and that's seven wins. Can they pull off two more to get to 9-7? Colts, Vikings, maybe a resting Packers team at the end, though the one bye this week puts more emphasis on winning as many as you can.

The offense changed and the team played with more energy when Foles came in, and evident by the play. Trubisky made some egregious mistakes and it was obvious the offense works the way Nagy wants it with Foles. This offensive system is where he has made hay, but the obvious is he has never held down a starting job. Can he mercenary for three fourths of a season?

What are the Chicago Bears? As a Windy City fan the answer is probably good enough to break your heart. The spurts are there for a playoff team and after watching last season we all knew the QB position needed to improve. It has, but by how much? Will they even find the consistency to stretch out half a game in to a more complete game week in and week out? We're going to find out real quick with the schedule picking up. That's also with the obvious loss of Eddie Goldman against the run and now without Tarik Cohen.

Bearly Open Window

Prepare for the worst and be surprised has to be the saying for Bears fan everywhere. With the dominant defense and young offense the double doink loss to the Eagles in 2018 sucked, but seemed like a lump for a team that will be back multiple times, but history says this window could already be closing.

Since the turn of the century the Chicago Bears have made the playoffs only five times with a record of 3-5 with three one and done appearances. Two seasons after putting together a stingy defense the cap is starting to stack up on that side of the ball; Khalil Mack, Robert Quinn and Eddie Jackson got paid this off season, Akiem Hicks, Eddie Goldman, Kyle Fuller and soon Roquan Smith. Four of the top five earners are on defense and the window of the cheap quaterback looks to be about over.

A key to success in the modern NFL is have a cheap quaterback and load up all around him to maximize the chances, but the number two overall pick may soon no longer have Chicago to call his home. It was quite clear the biggest problem for the Monsters of the Midway was their second year signal caller Mitchell Trubisky. General Manager Ryan Pace may have gotten the pick wrong, but credit for at least trying to do something about it

Management has already said it'll be an open competition between Trubisky and newly acquired Nick Foles. While Foles has had an up and down career as a starter, there's no denying his playoff success and is probably an improvement on Trubisky with a very talented team around him. The move alone signals management's understanding of the clock ticking on them and the Bear's chances to find success.

The closing window is also exacerbated by the fact Pace doesn't have a first round pick in 2020, but no one is arguing against the Mack trade, but they do have the 43 and 50 pick in the second round. Chicago has two 2nd rounders, a 4th, 5th, two in the 6th and two in the 7th, though that's unlikely what they'll finish with. Plenty of mock drafts already have the Bears trading at least one of the 2nd round picks to get pack in to the 3rd or load up on some more day three picks. That seems very likely, though I'd expect Pace to make at least one of the picks in the 2nd to get an impact player like a WR, S, CB or OL.

Another impact WR next to Allen Robinson, more OL help to boost the running game (besides Germain Ifedi, a S next to Jackson and depth for the rest of the defensive levels are my needs for Chicago. A mock draft from fansided has Pace selecting:

OL – Erza Cleveland -- Boise State

CB – Damon Arenette -- Ohio State

WR – Tyler Johnson -- Minnesota

TE – Harrsion Bryant -- FAU

RB – Patrick Taylor Jr. -- Memphis

S – Shyheim Carter -- Alabama

DE – D.J. Wonnum -- South Carolina

This draft gives them two possible day one starters at OL and CB, where they need the most help, another WR to give whoever is under center another weapon and depth at positions of need. Personally I think Chicago stays away from a RB and looks for line or LB depth.

In the NFC North the Bears talent has them up there near the top, the Lions are in a long rebuild in my opinion, but the truth is they won the division in a year of awful for Green Bay. Aaron Rodgers and the Packers bounced back last season but many found their record inflated but Green has some of the most picks in the draft. Minnesota has a very talent roster, though it has started to lose some pieces and Kirk Cousins is still under center.

If we get a 2020 season, please let that be the case, it's a make or break year in Chicago. Not only could Trubisky be on his way out but Pace and Matt Nagy could have their jobs on the line. The quarterback position has always alluded the Windy City and it could be the case where it's back to the drawing board because Foles is not the long term answer. For 2021 when Chicago gets it's 1st round picks back the new GM could be back looking for a signal caller while trying to maximize a defense that's just getting more and more expensive.

Winning Teams Make Moves

The NFL is on the precipice of the biggest free agent quarterback class of all time, the type of class that could really alter the NFL landscape. Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Dak Prescott, Ryan Tannehill, Phillip Rivers, Jameis Winston, Teddy Bridgewater, Marcus Mariota and Case Keenum are all free agents at this point for the 2020 off season. Not every one of those players is a no brainer starter but there's plenty there for a lot of NFL teams to consider.

Winning teams make moves to try and bring the championship home. The Houston Rockets did exactly that in the NBA. They surprised the basketball world by shipping off Clint Capela to go small ball all the time. Now plenty, myself included, don't think that's the way to a championship and Daryl Morey is just throwing things against the wall to see what works. However, it's a team that saw the writing on the wall and made a change to try and find what works.

Meanwhile you look at the Chicago Bears and their loyalty to Mitch Trubisky at the end of the season has teams frustrated again. It's fair to say it was coach speak as they aren't going to throw the kid under the bus before they can even make a move, but a lot feel like Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy's statements rang true. If Chicago runs it back then much of the same came be expected as the jury seems out on Mitch.

There aren't a ton of draft resources available after the Khalil Mack trade, still not one I regret, but that was a win now move. With the Mack trade, money he's making and their key players cheap it was about maximizing the chances. Instead the double doink ruined a promising season and last year was awful. If Trubisky isn't the answer then the GM needs to do everything in his power to take advantage of the window for his team that shares a division with Minnesota and Green Bay.

Look no further than the same city as the Chicago Cubs are waving the white flag. MLB has a problem as a league because of teams treating the luxury tax as a hard cap, but Theo Epstein was handicapped last year and all about admitted they were giving up on their window. Now, with the young players the veterans and getting more expensive the run looks like it could be at the end.

David Ross was hired to replace Joe Maddon, still a bit of a questionable move to me, but the culture change is the argument with the core of the World Series team still around. I'll have a longer leash for that argument of change IF the brain trust doesn't start tearing down the team. All off season has be filled with rumors of Kris Bryant, Javier Baez and Wilson Contreras possibly being trading, among others. A team with a lot of stars still in its prime is considering rebuilding?

The truth is Maddon was a scapegoat, and deserved some blame, but much like the Boston Red Sox, Epstein has handicapped the team with bad free agent signings. The inability to draft pitching put more pressure to spend excessive money on the staff. The first wave of big prospects were key in breaking the curse but it has fallen off dramatically. Where are the waves of prospects, international signings, any reinforcements?

It's not that great being a Chicago sports fan right now, mostly because of terrible management. It says a lot that the best front office, the Chicago Cubs, are in the same boat. Winning teams make moves, look at the Boston Celtics and their lack of aggressiveness. Are they really a threat to win a championship? Apparently one World Series was good enough for the Cubs, the Bears QB position will stay broken, the Bulls are a mess, the hope may just lie in the Blackhawks. It has been a rough few seasons coming down from all the win now moves but with three Stanley Cups it's a lot more understandable.

Now is Not the Time for Loyalty

If you're a Chicago Bears fan you're probably already sick of the season. This team came in as as a Super Bowl contender and looks far from it. After the double doink sent coach Nagy's squad home early last season another year in the offense and that vicious young defense growing up meant contending with the NFC North. Instead the offense is terrible and the defense is wearing down.

The new trend is to pair your young QB with an offensive mind to make him comfortable and build something. Last year it looked like something with all the movements but the saying is give them an off season and they'll figure you out. The verdict is out for the Bears. Despite drafting a new running back coach Nagy seems unwilling to run the ball. Chicago ran seven, SEVEN, times for 19 yards against the Saints.

It was 12-10 at half and all the coach could say was it wasn't getting first downs but passing the ball was. First of all, no it wasn't coach. Second, the running game is about patience and wearing a team down. With a beat up offensive line and a very good New Orleans' front seven your game plan was to have your inaccurate QB throw 54 times?! That is no formula to succeed, nor is it doing Trubisky any favors.

More concerning, with extra time to prepare Nagy has been killed. The opening game against the Green Bay Packers was an absolute embarrassment. With a bye week, at home and a Saints team missing some key pieces Chicago was barely in the game. If it wasn't for the Cordarrelle Patterson kick return there wouldn't have been really any points in the first half. That self-scouting didn't work coach and you got out worked with extra time, not a great sign.

Now is not the time for loyalty from GM Ryan Pace and the Bears front office. We're less than two seasons in to Matt Nagy's tenure and less than three in to Trubisky, but loyalty is what sets teams back. Maybe, maybe, Nagy needs more time but the jury seems to be out on Trubisky. Yes he was coming off an injury going in to the Saints game but he has massively regressed from last season. He was the number two overall pick, that Pace traded up for, but if he can't take advantage of the window the defense has then don't waste it by saying with something that doesn't work.

Now Pace is human and admitting he got the QB pick wrong could cost him his job but staying with Mitch could set the team back even more. What happens when this team does nothing and you have to decide to pay Eddie Jackson, Leonard Floyd, Roquan Smith, Tarik Cohen, etc? Loyalty to Trubisky, who doesn't deserve that big contract or maybe even his fifth year option picked up, means other players would have to leave. That would be a mistake.

Everyone knows what this defense is capable of but now the poor offense is clearly hurting the defense. In back-to-back games they've given up over 100 rushing yards. Maybe they're being exposed, the performance in the first half against the Raiders was awful, but the pressure of having to play perfect because Trubisky and the O can't do anything will wear on them. They held Teddy Bridgewater and the Saints to just 10 points in the first half before folding in the second.

Last year the Bears were 12-4 and hosted a playoff game but sports is a win now business. It may not be time to call for Nagy's job, yet, but even the most loyal fans have to be honest about Trubisky. This offense is doing nothing and has looked better with Chase Daniel under center, which isn't saying much either. Windows don't last long and loyalty in the wrong case could cost the Bears theirs. We'll see how they bounce back after a player's only meeting and the reeling Chargers coming to town next, but it's not looking good.

Two games with the Lions, Green Bay and Minnesota on the road, Kansas City and the Cowboys are still on the schedule. 1-5 anyone? The Chargers, Philly, Rams and Giants are the rest of the schedule and this team could find itself at possibly 8-8 and maybe back in the cellar of the NFC North without their first round pick in 2020.
