My Keisatsu Sentai Patoranger vs. Kaito Sentai Lupinranger Trademark and Rumors Reaction - September 25, 2017

Hoo boy, that’s a long title. Until we find out what the show is actually going to be called, I’m going to call it PvL in the titles of these articles.

Anywhoo, many people have different ways of deciding when Fall “officially” starts. Some people use the calendar, some people look at when the temperature falls below 10 degrees Celsius, some people judge it by when Starbucks starts selling Pumpkin Spice Lattes. But for me and many others, Fall officially begins when the more concrete Super Sentai rumors start a flyin’. And boy did Fall ever start for us today.

Not only did we get the official trademark for both (yes, both) of our Sentai teams next year (found here) but we also got our first rumor regarding team composition (found here). To summarize, we are getting two teams: one themed around police (Patoranger), and the other themed around phantom thieves (Lupinranger). While we don’t know what the story is yet, it stands to reason that the two teams are likely to clash. The rumored colors for Patoranger are Red, White, and Black, and the rumored colors for for Lupinranger are Gold, Silver, and Bronze.

Now I know what some of you may be thinking: “Oh no, Persona 5 fans are going to latch onto this as the ‘Persona 5 Sentai’ and drive us all crazy with their memes!” Well let me assure you all... I am a Persona 5 fan, and yes, that is exactly what’s going to happen. It is my personal goal to make each and every single one of you hate me long before the show starts.

Anyways, as is my custom, here is what I like/my hopes regarding this rumor, and this is what I don’t like/my fears on the rumor.

The Good:

TWO SENTAI TEAMS EEEEEEE!

PHANTOM THIEEEEEVES!! I consider a severe lack of modern phantom thief fiction to be one of western society’s greatest failings.

A BRONZE RANGER! YES PLEASE!

I love the idea of Lupinger being all metals.

I really hope they take advantage of the dyad of thieves and police in the mecha and make Patoranger vehicles and Lupinranger animals

The Bad:

... there’s no blue...

I don’t like the name Lupinranger. It looks and sounds really clunky, especially if we give Lupin the proper pronunciation of Lu-PAWN. Why not Lupinger, or Lupin Man (I miss the [name] Man naming scheme)

I’m a little worried about doing two teams at once. Yes, Kyuranger handled a large cast better than anyone ever anticipated, but they still dealt with a single team with a unified goal. This will be two separate teams that are more than likely to clash goal-wise. It stands to reason that this will present challenges to a half-hour children’s show.

WHY THE &%#ING %@$# IS THERE NO @&#%ING BLUE!?

I really hope the mecha are more straightforward and not dominated by a gimmick like they’ve seemed to have been since Goseiger onwards (I don’t count Shinkenger because the folding gimmick didn’t limit how the mecha could transform or combine. If anything, it made it cooler. Go-busters didn’t really have a gimmick, but it did have partsforming, which is NOT cool).

THIS NO BLUE RUMOR BETTER BE WRONG OR BLUE BETTER BE THE SIXTH RANGER, OR I RIOT! FOR A GOOD TWENTY SECONDS!

I know I have no reason to believe this to not happen, but I REALLY hope we get individual weapons again this year. Aside from the mecha, my favorite part of Sentai are the individual weapons.

So aside from... ahem... something that I may have gotten a little over-emotional about (BLUUUUUUUUE!!), I am really excited about this upcoming season. I do have my concerns, but I did with Kyuranger as well, and they were mostly addressed (man I need to get back into that show). As with last year, I will do my best to report on each new rumor Dukemon posts along with my impressions. And as with Kyuranger, I will do my best to review each new episode until I get lazy... which won’t take long, haha.

Also, this weekend I will try and post my ideas for a team line-up if I were in charge of Super Sentai. Look forward to it!
