i had to miss tonight’s stream because i had work. and work always makes me mad. then i went on twitter which was, of course, on fire. and then i got madder. so now we’re gonna have a little chat.
i’m going to take this opportunity to plug myself. i’ve done with before and it’s my pinned post. very in depth compared to this.
mitch did a charity stream, to be fair most of them are, any money donated goes toward his charity, but tonight in particular was a sanctioned stream. and instead of that being the story, it was he said it’s cold in toronto and if they have to play somewhere else, he hopes it’s warm.
i’m not entirely sure what the beef is with mitch. let’s explore (AGAIN)
his holdout? because mat barzal hasn’t re-signed yet. and neither has pierre luc dubois. who are both inarguably the best or one of the best on their respective teams. and they haven’t been in the news every fucking day. (to be clear: i’m not saying they should be getting hate or media pressure. no one should, but mitch did and that’s my point)
or is it the amount of money he made? because connor mcdavid is making more money and the oilers have been less successful than the leafs since. (and before anyone tries to argue mitch marner isn’t as good as connor mcdavid. i know, but they aren’t making the same amount, mitch makes less so i feel as if it’s a valid point to make - 15.3% of cap space vs 13.4%)
do people think he’s a bad person? using his platform to raise money for the homeless. then just all his foundation does aside from that. all the work they did during quarantine, helped in part by the money he raised while streaming. not only that but the amount of people that know him personally advocating for him, saying he’s so genuine and such a good guy?
if we were told mitch’s comment was said by someone else, would it be blowing up the same way? what if it were john tavares or jason spezza? what if it were connor mcdavid (about edmonton)? would we still be hearing all this noise?
this brings me to my final point. mitch is notoriously not like a typical manly dude in the nhl. he likes to snuggle, he wears pink, he talks about mental health. most attacking him on twitter. are men. so is this a masculinity issue? is hating mitch for hating the cold rooted in fragile masculinity. should he stand outside in shorts and say i love the cold, would that fix it? is it a capitalism issue? “this guy makes more money than me playing a sport so now when he says something i probably agree with but have to put up with anyway i get mad!” rage against the system then man.
i’m unsure. but i’m tired of logging on twitter to see it in flames over something small. we all know toronto athletes aren’t allowed to have a personality but like. holy shit. this is me kindly asking all the dudebros of hockey twitter just shut the fuck up
hey!! i saw ur tag. mitch has like a package deal of nicknames. mitchy, marnie, mitchy marnie, mitchy marner, mitch marnie, marns (the one i use), mitchy mouse, or just mitch. -oskarlindy
