I read where someone was like, how would the greenhouse scene in Episode 17 be okay if it were flipped, where Mitsuru was the aggressor instead.

Yeah, I could see how that part could possibly be problematic if it were gender-switched...which was interesting to think about. But let’s break it down a little bit.

I really think it’s all in the way it’s done. Because usually when a male is written to be the initiator, he makes advances in a really aggressive way, often violent...usually involving a lot of forceful grabbing, lightning-fast tearing off of clothes, shoving, etc. Whereas, the way Kokoro did it was slow and deliberate, gentle, and she explained her reasoning before she had so much as exposed his neck...she never restricted him in any way, didn’t take his hands, or even pin him by sitting on his lap, etc.

In fact, he was the only one to use force when he slapped her hand away after she brought him outside of his comfort zone.

Her slow deliberation was not only to check in with herself, but also to check in with him...the slow gestures and caresses meant to give him time to register what was happening and time to protest...which is exactly what happened, even before Zorome interrupted.

I like to think that if things had carried on the same way with a male in Kokoro’s position, I’d be just as satisfied with the outcomes, gender roles aside.
