Over the past two weeks I’ve had a great time exploring the Michigan wine scene with the Michigan Wine Collaborative/@MIWineCollab and many others connected to the region. Pictured is a bottle from @StJulianWinery I opened last week. Grüner Veltliner is a variety largely associated with Austria (and rightfully so), but this single-vineyard example from Oxley Farms in Lawton, was rather enjoyable. There's bright orchard fruit, citrus, and melon flavors with a hint of exotic spice—all framed by an unwavering line of acidity. It is easy to drink and very food-friendly. 45 North Vineyard & Winery: This family owned-and-operated winery’s name comes from the 45th parallel running smack-dab through their vineyard on Michigan's beautiful Leelanau Peninsula. Produced from 100% Riesling, this sparkler is very gulpable with a refreshing zestiness. The palate delivers delicate splashes of fresh pear, citrus blossom and apple, with vibrant acidity lifting the crisp, lychee tinged finish. It’s lightly sparkling—like a frizzante—but is fun and tasty nonetheless. Vintage 2020; only 210 cases produced. Modales Wines 2018 Pinot Gris: Pours medium straw; bright profile, nicely textured, and refreshingly fruity, offering vibrant flavors of apple, perfumed pear and stone fruit, backed by firm [citrusy] acidity and a lingering, juicy finish. Modales 2016 Cabernet Franc (SRP $24): Medium-bodied, harmonious, fresh character (...and smells wonderful); there’s notes of black cherry, blackberry, and spiced fruitcake with a delicious savory edge. Lovely texture with no hard edges, although slight grip on the juicy finish. Michigan-grown and an absolute delight!
