“Everything hurts.”
“That’s because you were stabbed, beautiful.”
The laugh that leaves him is dry because he’s choking back the tears, a hand running throughout her soft hair. His head is leaning against her pillow and his eyes are closed, shaking his head in disbelief. They were in a fucked up world when the epitome of kind had been left outside the hospital, bloodied and bruised by an unknown assailant.
It was rare that he took the graveyard shift, the hospital worked with his timetable to accommodate his daughter in his life and it’s on rare occasion he gets called in at midnight, but turns out Mrs. Han couldn’t force another stroke so he had to come in because she only preferred him out of the plethora of vascular surgeons of her choosing.
When he parked up his car with two coffees in hand - naturally, one for his right hand because who else in their right mind would drink a venti double-mocha blend with whipped cream and caramel syrup? Her. Jaerim would always retort how it would taste like feet and she’d always reply how his whole milk lattes would be the end of his waistline.
Except he was met with the sight of a torn and bruised Jessica bleeding out on the floor, causing both of the coffees to drop from his hands.
He cradled her frame to his chest and rushed in, the other doctors startled at the sight of the two and mainly the vast blood gushing out of her and staining his white gowns.
Jaerim decided to take charge. He was the one who found her outside the hospital, fetal position and bleeding from the spleen outwards. Being trained in his profession had caused him to see a spectrum of fucked up things, but there was one thing you could never get used to, and that was seeing someone you loved on the floor. The other surgeons said he wouldn’t be emotional objective to carry out the operation but he was the one carrying her body, he was the one who knew what to do and he was going to do it whether it was by hook or by crook.
The operation took five hours and much to everyones surprise, he was in charge, objective and he managed to talk to the patient (it was odd calling her that, she was Jessica, HIS Jessica.) throughout the procedure. In the end the female was left with deep stitches and she’d have to be on rest (he’d damn well make sure she was on paid leave, that’s for sure) for a very long time.
When she was wheeled into the recovery ward, the nurses had insisted that he get changed out of his clothes but he refused to let a minute go by where he wasn’t by her side, so he simply drew the curtains around her section and stayed by her side. His hand had slipped into hers and he intwined their fingers, his head resting near her pillow whilst she slept in a morphine daze.
Her fond voice broke the trance of his own illusive attitude of where he kept quiet and gave her hands gentle squeezes where he could, ignoring the blood splatter on his clothes and cheek. Relief washed over him like a cool Hawaiian wave.
Inhale, exhale, she’s okay.
Jaerim leaned in to press a soft kiss against her forehead and refused to let go of her hand, pulling back slightly so he could check her steadied vitals. “You said my coffee habits would kill me..” His voice was cracked, croaky almost.
“But damn, you nearly beat me to it.”
