This is massive insight into Katniss' feelings. If Peeta were the one whose time was being monopolized while she experienced all this there is no way she wouldn't consider it an inconvenience. Even if you don't believe that, it's incredibly telling that during all this turmoil she doesn't desire Gale's company and once she realizes that he hasn't been by her side for much of it, she's completely unphased. She doesn't long for him in any capacity, not even in friendship.

I shift my arms slightly so I can see his expression through the crack. He's exhausted and discouraged as he admits, 'I think Peeta might get somewhat better. But...I don't think he'll ever be the same." I snap my arms back together, closing the crack, shutting them all out."

In all my reading about Katniss' reaction to Peeta's hijacking, not once have I seen this moment mentioned and it matters.

Haymitch's response is incredibly irresponsible and damaging. He spoke way too soon and it was based on absolutely no actual information. It doesn't matter how mature Katniss is, she is still a kid who relies on his judgement. He is her mentor. He failed her and Peeta in this moment. What he says spurred her shutting down and giving up on Peeta. Prim offers her hope but upon seeing Peeta scream that she's a mutt she rejects Prims notion. Would Katniss have succumbed to believing Peeta is irretrievable and run off to D2 if Haymitch had not planted this seed? What if he had said something different? What if Prim hadn't asked him at all?
