I don’t think Kale truly understands how touch starved he is, imo my hc is I think he’s convinced himself throughout his life that he’s fine as is and distanced himself emotionally from others to the point of misanthropy, but deep down he so desperately needs human connection and he can’t articulate it to himself (he doesn’t have that kind of honest introspection).
Anyways here comes MJ who latches onto the wrong type of people, and Kale is kind of a rebound from MJs dumpster fire dating history and I think MJ underestimated how much he ended up genuinely loving Kale (even if it isn’t for the healthiest of reasons). As emotionally burdened as both of them are, they need each other. Kale needs someone who’s explicit and bombastic about their love for him, and MJ needs someone who doesn’t interpret his love languages as love bombing.
MJ learnt Kale is just as picky as he is when it comes to coffee so now he makes him café de olla all the time (and conchas)
After 2 months, I finally finished MJ's ref for Hi-Fi Rush!!!
I know the tone of MJs backstory doesn't exactly match with the sillier tone of Hi-Fi, but it was an approach I wanted to go for to just get more worldbuilding opportunities out there! As well as, admittedly having a soapbox moment just writing from my own personal experience working in international NGOs for about half a decade now ;o;
MJ's been an OC I've been working on since 2018, and I've placed him in a handful of different AUs/fandoms, but I'm just really vibing with what I've revamped here!
I think Kale looks better in green cause it matches his eyes better (also the dark green really adds to that vibe of being a money hungry CEO u feel me)
But ALSO cause MJs colour scheme is black and red- that’s his colours so hes just,, gonna force kale to wear something else,, yeah
