3Q Earnings: Facebook’s Mobile Upswing Continues (AllFacebook) Mobile growth was everywhere to be found among Facebook’s third-quarter 2014 financial results, as mobile advertising revenue accounted for approximately 66 percent of total ad revenue for the period, up from 49 percent in the third quarter of 2013. Facebook reported revenue of $3.2 billion for the quarter, up 59 percent from $2.02 billion in the year-earlier period. Inside Facebook Other key figures: Daily active users were 864 million on average for September 2014, an increase of 19 percent year-over-year. Mobile DAUs were 703 million on average for September 2014, an increase of 39 percent year-over-year. The Wall Street Journal Facebook missed profit expectations for the first time in two years as the social network warned investors that higher costs from a series of acquisitions are beginning to take a toll on results. Costs rose 41 percent during a quarter in which Facebook added roughly 1,200 new employees, most of them through a series of acquisitions including the $19 billion deal for messaging app WhatsApp and a $2 billion buy of virtual-reality headset maker Oculus Rift. The New York Times Facebook’s global user growth, like Twitter’s, has been slowing, but that has not troubled Wall Street the way Twitter’s slowdown has. The reason is that Facebook, the world’s largest social network, is so huge in developed countries that the only markets still open for major expansion are poorer nations, where the immediate prospects for selling ads are dimmer. Reuters Facebook also for the first time disclosed the financial performance for WhatsApp, a mobile messaging app that the company acquired earlier this month for $22 billion. According to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Tuesday, WhatsApp lost $232.5 million in the first six months of 2014, compared to a loss of $58.8 million in the first six months of 2013.
Tumblr Introduces Auto-play Video Ads (SocialTimes) Tumblr is rolling out the first of its video ads Tuesday, reports Ad Age. The company has a group of 11 brands to test out the ads before opening them up to all advertisers. Among the first to try them out are Hulu, JCPenney and Universal Pictures.
Why Did Taco Bell Just Wipe Out its Social Media Accounts? (Adweek) Taco Bell made a bold move Tuesday to grab the attention of hungry millennials. It darkened its social media pages (even appearing to wipe out its 1.4 million Twitter followers and erase all previous Facebook posts) to spotlight a single message: Customers can now order tacos, burritos and chalupas from the chain’s new mobile app.
YouTube Finally Arrives on the PlayStation 4 (VentureBeat) YouTube released its app Tuesday for Sony’s PlayStation 4. You can download it now directly from the PlayStation store (it’s 69.1MB).
Twitter Pulls Google Glass App (AllTwitter) Twitter launched its Google Glass app back in May 2013, and the product has been featured as one of the recommended Glassware products on the official Glass store ever since. That is, until now.
Michael Jordan’s Social Media Buzz (ESPN) Charlotte Hornets owner and all-time NBA great Michael Jordan took over (#MJTakeover) his team’s Twitter, Instagram and Facebook accounts on the NBA’s opening day. Everyone is a Critic: VH1′s ‘Drumline 2: A New Beat’ Flops With Fans (LostRemote) “Drumline 2: A New Beat,” a spinoff of the super successful 2002 film “Drumline,” premiered Monday night. When #DrumlineANewBeat was circling around social media, fans could hardly contain themselves waiting for showtime.
Wikipedia Aims to Become More Mobile, Global (Re/code) Wikimedia’s new executive director said the nonprofit is betting heavily on mobile as it strives to reach new audiences in developing regions and stay on top of shifting trends throughout the world. “The majority of our investments are now going into product and engineering, and within that the majority is starting to go into mobility,” said Lila Tretikov at Code/Mobile, in one of her first public appearances since taking the role in May.
Most People Don’t Know Enough to Distrust BuzzFeed (SocialTimes) BuzzFeed gets a bad rap when it comes to journalism, and sometimes it’s well deserved. The site has been beefing up its staff of journalists and producing more longform content, but some of its tactics are still questionable, at best. However, what’s most interesting about the Pew report that spawned the “Nobody Trusts BuzzFeed” comments are its observations about the filter bubble.
