Ombra being a mother figure (part 4)
I was once again in the mood to continue these silly drabbles of Ombra and Ferriel’s daughter again! The previous parts are linked to my pinned post.

My mom irritated me sometimes. Or maybe usually. It was hard to tell when she’s not around as much as my classmates’ parents.
I stepped out of the elevator and crossed a narrow hallway. I reached into my jacket’s pocket for the key she gave, so I could once again cling to Ombra for help. Once the door was opened, my head automatically rolled up all the way to the highest point of the tallest ceiling a home could ask for. The corpse of the balloon I set free on my eleventh birthday was still there, hanging on a sharp edge of a stone.
Ombra was standing by the sink doing something. She was wearing a black t-shirt with black shorts. Seeing her so comfortable like this was weird, as if it was a glitch in matrix.
She turned around and crossed her arms over her chest. Her cheeks were slightly puffed up.
“Hey.” I leaned against the island.
She nodded.
“I have a school meeting tomorrow. And mom is busy. She can’t come. So she said that you’re free tomorrow.” I paused, readying the words. “Can you attend the meeting, please?”
She turned to the sink again and spat out a blue liquid. After rinsing her lips, she spoke.
“I’m never free.”
I quircked my lips. “Well, tomorrow you are.”
“Tell them your mom is busy. They can’t force you to do anything.”
“This is different. Our chemistry teacher spoke to us. It wouldn’t be so…respectful if I didn’t listen to her. I mean…on my mom’s behalf.” My mom hated if her reputation was ever wounded.
“What time?”
“Ten.”
Ombra stared off into nothing.
“Fine.”
I smiled. “Thanks.”
She walked over to her bedroom. “Asfel isn’t coming tonight. You can sleep on his bed.”
I followed her to her bedroom, fiddling with my fingers. “Can I…stay here tonight?”
She paused mid-arranging her mouth hygiene stuff. “Why?”
I shrugged. “I’ve been sleeping alone for a week now. I got tired of it.”
“Okay.” She dimmed the lights and untied her hair.
I took off my jacket and hung it behind the door. That was the place for outside clothes. Those weren’t allowed to be anywhere else, especially not thrown to the floor.
I climbed onto her bed. The sheets smelled like a weird mix of iron and body spray. Not gonna lie, I felt privileged that I was one of the few people who could sleep on her bed. The other one was uncle Asfel. I wasn’t sure about my mom. Such a situation had never happened with her.
After a few minutes, I whispered. “You don’t have to stay for the whole thing.”
“I know.”
“Can we get launch after school?”
“Pizza?”
“Maybe.”
“When was the last time you had pizza?”
“Last week.”
“That would be too much.”
Sometimes, she was worse than my mom. “People go out to eat junk food.”
“If people jump down a cliff, you will jump too?”
I should have stayed home. She continued. “Anything other than fast food. Or I’ll cook something here.”
“Fine.”
“Now sleep.”
