Martin Luther King Day of Service Volunteer Projects at PPR Sites
Each year on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (January 16), tens of thousands of volunteers across the region gather to participate in the Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King Day of Service, the largest King Day event in the nation. Philadelphia Parks & Recreation (PPR) has been an active participant in the event since 1996 when the King Day of Service initiative began. As part of the 2017 MLK Day of Service, PPR playgrounds, recreation centers, and parks across Philadelphia will host volunteer projects that address the needs of their neighborhoods, including indoor and outdoor cleanups, painting projects, and community events. Some PPR recreation centers will also participate in the One King Book essay contest, a program designed to educate young people about Dr. King and the principles that shape his legacy.
Explore the list below to find a King Day service project at a PPR playground, recreation center, or park near you. To learn more about volunteering at a PPR site on MLK Service Day, check to see if volunteers are still needed and register to volunteer on the MLK Day of Service website or contact the specific site you are interested in volunteering at.
