Tarken Playground Gets a Makeover on Martin Luther King Day of Service

On Monday, January 16, several Philadelphia Parks & Recreation facilities participated in the annual Martin Luther King Day of Service. An example of one project that occurred was the revitalization of the Tarken Playground building in the Oxford Circle neighborhood. A group of volunteers, including Recreation Leader Walt Mullholland, PPR staff members and members and clergy from Old York Road Temple Beth Am in Abington, arrived bright and early to help make Tarken a more welcoming place for all who visit. 

Volunteers painted the walls of the multi-purpose room and lobby area, which are used mainly by children who attend the after-school program. Participants also organized and cleaned the game room. “It needed to be done,” said Walt. “The building needed to be refreshed. The kids will love it.”

The volunteers from Old York Road Temple Beth Am hope to continue working with PPR to improve conditions at Tarken over the next several months. 

PPR extends a huge thank you to all who took the time to come out and participate in this project, as well as all the others that occurred throughout the day!

Martin Luther King Day of Service Volunteer Projects at PPR Sites

Each year on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (January 16), tens of thousands of volunteers across the region gather to participate in the Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King Day of Service, the largest King Day event in the nation. Philadelphia Parks & Recreation (PPR) has been an active participant in the event since 1996 when the King Day of Service initiative began. As part of the 2017 MLK Day of Service, PPR playgrounds, recreation centers, and parks across Philadelphia will host volunteer projects that address the needs of their neighborhoods, including indoor and outdoor cleanups, painting projects, and community events. Some PPR recreation centers will also participate in the One King Book essay contest, a program designed to educate young people about Dr. King and the principles that shape his legacy.
