Rousey v Holm: Why
To be honest, this match is a gimme. Record rousey charging forward, throwing a few punches and eating a few more, getting into the clinch and throwing Girl X to the ground.
Put it on repeat. Add: Armbar.
See also: Davis, Kaufman, Zingano.
If you live your life based on the idea that ‘you’re only as good as your last fight’, hate to tell you, but it’s misguided at very best. Yes, Rousey has abandoned the ground game in her past two relevant fights, this is in no way a sign of a grappler falling in love with her striking.
Rousey knows what she’s good at, better than every other chick on that roster. The only way she’s succeeded in her last few fights is the enormous looming threat of her takedown game.
See, imagine if you spent the majority of your training camp training judo/takedown/armbar defence. You’ve looked at the various set ups shes put forth in her tapes. The feared judo game based on getting in close, getting in near, getting you to the ground. And that fearsome armbar reputation most have fallen victim to. Obviously.
You’re entire game plan is based on avoiding the clinch game and the closeness that it embodies. Getting out of her range, staying there and beating her up with punches.
And say your opponent immediately bum rushes you with punches. Like she does every fight. You’ve trained for this, you’ve seen this before. The difference is, this time she isn’t looking for the takedown.
You see, Rouseys entire game plan was to use the threat of the takedown to get in close. Of course, Correia would be looking, above all, to avoid that takedown. It was probably incorporated into her entire camp, the idea that she should avoid or take the insignificant flurry of punches that precedes the takedown. When those punches came, Correia was thinking 100% about the takedown. Probably still was, when Rouseys right hand crumpled her in half.
See: How goddamn low Correia’s arms were during every single exchange.
This will be the exact same in the Holm fight. Don't be surprised by the knockout, but expect the submission. Cause Rousey probably smart enough to suspect Holms figured out her game plan.
