Remus knows from his mental map of the block that he's standing in the only outlet to the small alley, and if something is in there, it's going to go through him. Hesitantly, he takes another tentative step inward, the hair on the back of his neck prickling, and then wonders what the hell he's doing. Whatever it is could be anything, a wild animal, a giant rodent, a badger—a-a rat of unusual size.
His heel catches on something that his cane had missed, and his foot nearly slides out from under him. He fumbles groceries, struggling to keep upright and hold onto his things at the same time. Scuffing his foot along the ground, he huffs to himself, shaking his head at his ridiculousness, and turns to leave.
"Right, then." Just talking to air, as one does.
A voice sounds, muffled and deep down the narrow gap. Remus stops, striking the base of his cane against the wall in front of him, looking for the corner.
"Yes?" he asks, not sure why on earth he's not just walking away as fast as his wobbly legs and soggy socks can take him.
"I just—" it takes a moment, then there's a little scuffle and a few scraping noises again before the voice sounds, much closer than before. "Can you not tell anyone I'm here?"
Remus furrows his brow. "I don't even know who you are." The voice sounds young, maybe early twenties, and sounds male, but that's not always true.
"Oh," the man gives a little, sharp bark of a laugh, drifting closer to Remus, who can hardly keep himself from leaning away, partially because he smells like he may have rolled in garbage. "Oh, I see."
"Well, I don't," Remus says, a knee-jerk reaction.
