Feet of Clay, a new Poldark fanfic by mmmuses
gifset by @vavaharrison (original here)
I’ve been pondering about writing a fic that covered the six month timeframe between The Incident and The Reconciliation ever since series two aired. Starting to dabble with it now. I don’t think I’ll finish it before series three starts sometime in June, but we’ll see what happens.
feet of clay: a fundamental flaw or weakness in a person otherwise revered.
Thou, O king, sawest, and behold a great image. This great image, whose brightness was excellent, stood before thee; and the form thereof was terrible. This image’s head was of fine gold, his breast and his arms of silver, his belly and his thighs of brass, his legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay. (Daniel 2:31-33)
Ross pulled the door shut behind him, her words still ringing in his ears.
“To think I did always look up to you, respect you, revere you as my master, long before you were my husband. For it did seem to me, unschooled as I was, that you were not like other men. You had a kind of nobility – not of birth, but of character – and I was so proud to think that such a man would marry me. So now to discover that you are so much less than other men, or fallen so low, because so far? Tis not my pride that is wounded, Ross. Tis my pride in you.”
Her eyes, so changeable with her moods and always the beacon of her emotions, were devoid of the blues and greens that readily shone in times of happiness, support, and passion. Even the dove grey of sorrow had fled the field, replaced with a hue he’d never encountered in all of their years together. Shattered ice that froze at a glance over her teacup, and burned in the fixed, measured stare she’d delivered along with her words.
He’d gone to her bedroom – because it had become her bedroom the moment he’d ordered her out of his way – worried that the lack of her presence downstairs meant she’d fallen into some kind of malaise, or despondency, now that her initial reaction over his return from Trenwith had passed. What a foolish, arrogant assumption for him to make, well in keeping for the likes of him. For she did not resemble the meek or mild wife he’d known for these five years, but a creature new and unfamiliar in their household. The tigress – grown from the cub he’d rescued, who’d woven seductive spells and earthy passions during their early days of marriage -- had bared her claws.
