Some QNA with Patrick Russel

Body and Appearance

1. Describe the character’s height and build. Is he/she heavyset, thin, short, rangy?

Beckett is around six feet, two inches and has the typical "male" build- broad shoulders, smaller waist, flat stomach, yet not necessarily a toned one.

2. How old is he/she?

Beckett is twenty-one years old and his birthday is on July 29th.

3. Describe his/her posture. Does he/she carry himself well or does he/she slouch?

When it comes to his posture, it depends on how his self-confidence is feeling for the day. There are some days when he's folded in half (mostly because of the mocking people do for his whiteboard, sometimes) and other days he's as straight as a rod.

4. How is his/her health? Is he/she fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities?

His health is normal- Beck doesn't get sick that often, but when he does, it's usually pretty bad (think flu-like symptoms). He becomes a giant baby when he's sick and groans and moans (silently) about everything. He's got no physical disabilities (aside from his lack of speech), and he's as happy as any twenty-one year old can be.

5. How does he/she move? Is he/she clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid?

He's clumsy as hell, especially when it comes to being around the girl he likes or large groups of people.

6. How attractive is this character physically? How does he/she perceive himself in the mirror?

Beckett has always seen himself as "average," yet everyone around him always argues that he's well above that standard. He just doesn't see it.

7. Describe his/her complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred?

Clear, for the most part. He's only just out of being a teenager, though, so give him a break if he gets stress pimples every now and again. It happens.

8. Describe his/her hair: color, texture, style.

Beck's got blonde hair- natural, that is. It's light and soft, crazy in the morning and styled to a T during the day.

9. What color are his/her eyes?

Ocean blue. The first thing everyone notices, of course.

10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features?

His nose. He's got such a cute nose with a little bit of an upturn. It's just begging to be booped.

11. What are his/her chief tension centers?

His left hand, of course. Writing all day, every day does that to a guy. And his neck, from being bent over books so often.

12. What is the character’s wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does he/she have six of the same suit?

Beckett is literally the equivalent to that of a nerd and a hipster crossed. He owns entirely too many flannels and button-up shirts, vans, and band shirts. His lip ring just ties it all together.

13. Do his/her clothes fit well? Does he/she seem comfortable in them?

He's definitely comfortable in them, but there are days when he'll refuse to wear pants. Just because pants.

14. Does he/she dress the same on the job as he/she does in his free time? If not, what are the differences?

Currently, Beck doesn't have a job, but if he did- it'd probably be one with a required uniform. Probably slacks and a white shirt, so no, he doesn't dress much like what his job would require.

15. You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando?

Boxer-briefs, of course. Keeps everything together and comfortable.

Speech

1. What does this character’s voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse?

Honestly, Beck hasn't spoken since he was seven. He doesn't really know what it sounds like anymore. No one really does. But it's soft- or will be, eventually. Rather scratchy and hoarse from misuse.

2. How does he/she normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does he/she talk easily, or does he/she hesitate?

He doesn't speak, but he hesitates when he writes. It's taught him a lot about think before you speak.

3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics?

He's actually Australian- he moved to London just after the age of eight. If his accent still stands, well, we just don't know.

4. What language/s does he/she speak, and with how much fluency?

Beck actually knows sign language. It helps quite a bit sometimes. It's also how he managed to pass grade school.

5. Does he/she switch languages or dialects in certain situations?

Nope. Not at all. He can't. Not with a whiteboard.

6. Is he/she a good impromptu speaker, or does he/she have to think about his words?

Beckett always thinks about what he says before he writes it. That's his first and only rule.

7. Is he/she eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change?

Eloquent. He studied literature as a way to become more fluent with his wording than he had been. The only time that changes is when he's horny. Let's be honest, if he's turned on, it's going to be nothing but wha- and um-

Mental and Emotional

1. How intelligent is this character? Is he/she book-smart or street-smart?

Becks is highly intelligent. That mostly stems from his lack of speech, therefore it's just folded into his constant focus on listening to everything. It sinks in and just makes sense. He's definitely more book-smart, although, that's probably not the better of the two.

2. Does he/she think on his feet, or does he/she need time to deliberate?

Beckett always needs time to deliberate.

3. Describe the character’s thought process. Is he/she more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical?

He's more logical, but he kinda hates that about himself. Sometimes he just wishes he could go with his gut feeling. Definitely more practical, too. One day he'll come out of his shell. Maybe.

4. What kind of education has the character had?

Graduated early from University with a degree in English Literature- top of his class.

5. What are his/her areas of expertise? What, if anything, is he/she interested in learning more about?

Literature and only literature. He knows everything about anything when it comes to books and will argue why feminist analysis is clearly the most important, even over post-colonial. Really though, he'd love to learn more about psychology. Maybe then he'll be able to figure out what's wrong with him.

6. Is he/she an introvert or an extrovert?

Introverted. One-hundred-percent.

7. Describe the character’s temperament. Is he/she even-tempered or does he/she have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven?

He's oddly even-tempered. Maybe it's due largely in part to his childhood, or maybe it's because with what he lacks in speech, it's hard to form a proper argument about anything.

8. How does he/she respond to new people or situations? Is he/she suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic?

Why not just go ahead and change his name from Beckett to Nancy? If only to call him nervous Nancy, that is. He's enthusiastic about books, but ultimately, he's a sarcastic, witty guy that just needs someone to get him.

9. Is he/she more likely to act, or to react?

React, if anything. Beckett tends to sit on the last row when it comes to acting out on something he feels.

10. Which is his/her default: fight or flight?

Flight. How else would he have met the most lovely girl?

11. Describe the character’s sense of humor. Does he/she appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks?

Dry. So, so dry. Definitely a few puns. Always a bit of bathroom humor.

12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does he/she deal with them?

He's got select mutism, but I don't know if I'd call that a mental disorder.

13. What moments in this character’s life have defined him/her as a person?

The physical and mental abuse his father inflicted upon him and his mother from the age of four to eight. It's how he became mute, after all.

14. What does he/she fear?

Beckett fears not being able to give the people he loves all of them. That's all he wants. To please and obey.

15. What are his/her hopes or aspirations?

Finding happiness and someone to spend it with.

16. What is something he/she doesn’t want anyone to find out about him/her?

He refuses to tell anyone about how he became mute. There's no reason for them to know that his younger-self resorted to mutism as a child and that now, at twenty-one, he still can't overcome his fear.

Relationships

1. Describe this character’s relationship with his/her parents.

He adores his mother to bits, but Beckett refuses to speak of his father. In his eyes, he doesn't have one.

2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like?

Nope. He's an only child.

3. Are there other blood relatives to whom he/she is close? Are there ones he/she can’t stand?

He's got this aunt- aunt Amy- who he adores. She sends him a variety of different whiteboards every year. Including the one he's got in his room- the entire size of the wall.

4. Are there other, unrelated people whom he/she considers part of his family? What are his/her relationships with them?

No, Beckett is very much a non-people person.

5. Who is/was the character’s best friend? How did they meet?

Anthony Douglass and Ryan Tirsh in high school. They saw his whiteboard, found it interesting, and the rest is history, really.

6. Does he/she have other close friends?

He's working on building a few currently- Eileen and Meryl, and maybe even Delilah, too.

7. Does he/she make friends easily, or does he/she have trouble getting along with people?

He definitely has trouble getting on with people. His whiteboard acts as a barrier for almost everyone.

8. Which does he/she consider more important: family or friends?

Family. It'll always be family.

9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has he/she been married more than once?

Single.

10. Is he/she currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse?

No. And he never will be.

11. Who was his/her first crush? Who is his/her latest?

Jaden Lane. A small, little Asian girl in the eighth grade. She was also his first kiss.

Currently, well, it's Lillian Moon. You could even say he gets a bit moon-y over her.

12. What does he/she look for in a romantic partner?

Faith and trust. Those things go a long way.

13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does he/she relate to them? If no, does he/she want any?

He definitely wants kids, but not for a long while.

14. Does he/she have any rivals or enemies?

No.

15. What is the character’s sexual orientation? Where does he/she fall on the Kinsey scale?

Straight. But comfortable.

16. How does he/she feel about sex? How important is it to him/her?

He loves sex. He likes the intimacy behind it, but Beckett would never force someone to have sex with him. No matter how horny he is.

17. What are his/her turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits?

Turn ons: Lingerie. Always. Nothing is more gorgeous and mouth-watering than a girl in sexy underwear. Especially when they're wearing that stuff for him. Rough sex, too. Biting. Hickeys (giving or receiving, lets be honest).

Turn offs: Lack of emotion and/or a girl who is too quiet. He likes to be able to hear her say his name. It makes up for his silence.

Beliefs

1. Do you know your character’s astrological (zodiac of choice) sign? How well does he/she fit type?

Beckett couldn't give two shits about that bullshit so he's never taken the time to look it up (neither have I, lets be real).

2. Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in his/her life?

When it comes to death, Beckett is terrified of dying and there not being an afterlife. He refuses to accept it just ends. It confuses and frustrates him.

3. Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it?

He does, yes. It began the moment him and his mother escaped his father, really. Treat people with respect, be polite, don't do something rash because they acted out against you. At this point, Beck doesn't think anything could compromise it. It's what he lives by.

4. How does he/she regard beliefs that differ from his? Is he/she tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent?

He's completely and one-hundred-percent tolerant. That's it. No ands/ifs/or buts about it.

5. What prejudices does he/she hold? Are they irrational or does he/she have a good reason for them?

He's convinced all rednecks are idiots. That's about it.

Daily Life

1. What is the character’s financial situation? Is he/she rich, poor, comfortable, in debt?

After leaving her father, Beck's mom struggled for a bit, but once she remarried (to a man Beck now considers his father), things turned upwards. Now, Beck and his family live comfortably (very comfortably, to put it mildly), but he refuses to say he's rich, only because it sounds pretentious.

2. What is his/her social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected him/her?

He's a dork. That's all there is to it.

3. Where does he/she live? House, apartment, trailer? Is his/her home his/her castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does he/she share it with others?

He lives in his own one bedroom, two bathroom apartment. It's his home, it's where he makes his mark- where he writes and reads and everything makes sense to him. It's clean, but not sparkling. It's messy, but not dirty.

4. Besides the basic necessities, what does he/she spend his/her money on?

Books. Clothes. Usually books, though.

5. What does he/she do for a living? Is he/she good at it? Does he/she enjoy it, or would he/she rather be doing something else?

He doesn't do anything at the moment. He doesn't even know what he wants to do (although his parents are completely okay with that, he's not).

6. What are his/her interests or hobbies? How does he/she spend his/her free time?

Beckett writes a lot. He's written a few unpublished novels that're collecting dust in his closest. He also volunteers at the local center for the deaf and mute. Somewhere he feels less alone and more understood.

7. What are his/her eating habits? Does he/she skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods?

He eats three meals a day and avoids chocolate (but not really, because he loves that stuff way too much). His alcoholic intake is low, mostly because his biological father was one and he knows it's hereditary.

Which of the following do you associate with the character, or which is his/her favorite:
