Mo'anne & the River

the unicorns' goddess Mo'anne is a moon goddess, and the general explanation of her is most of the usual associations that go with lunar goddesses.

(her name is pronounced mo-awn, it does not rhyme with Joanne lol)

she is a dual-goddess; she has two sides of herself that make up a whole. Mo'anne is the light side of the moon, the River is the dark side of the moon. together they're one deity, but distinct from each other.

the name Mo'anne is also used to refer to both halves as a whole. so sometimes it can be vague in the legends/scripture if it's referring to the whole goddess or just this half.

Mo'anne created the unicorns and they are her most precious children. the unicorns' religion varies from culture to culture and they do worship other deities, but Mo'anne is their central one. she is the very main focus of Estrella's clan, as they're sort of the main temple for this goddess.

the mythology goes... something like this. this is not a finished world lol. soo once upon a time, etc, she had no name, and she had only one self. then the darkness came and pulled her deep down where she faced herself. after a long struggle, she cut her head off to separate the two selves. but then she felt herself unwhole, and cried out to the stars and moon to help her. (she's a god, so I guess this is all happening in a spiritual sort of way rather than her having a physical body) the heavens raise her to the moon, who embraces her and mends her throat. the two halves are whole again, and the moon names them Mo'anne and the River. then, she either lives on the moon or becomes one with the moon, depending on the version of the legend.

Mo'anne is more of a mothering figure, nurturing and creating. she is tradition and the natural ways and consistency. she is sort of the default half that is usually being worshipped and addressed.

the River has the same untamable heartbeat as the unicorns she created. she is passion and dreams and following your heart and letting your inner strength course. she directly communes with her unicorns less than Mo'anne does and she has a penchant for dark magic.

Mo'anne is usually depicted as a woman with long gray hair, a gray unicorn with silver hair, or sometimes as a gray rabbit. she is depicted with a scar across her throat and pale blue eyes- though in some art they are red.

trivia under the cut—

— the idea of making the spiritual/religion part of this story came from combining a character I had been playing with, a space rabbit girl with two halves for the light/dark moon, Mo'anne & River. I thought unicorns worshipping a moon deity made sense with Estrella's ~aesthetic~ and this character was going nowhere anyway- so now she's a god!

— the whole neck-cutting thing came from a rabbit figure that had patterns carved all over it, including one across the neck almost like a frankenstein stitch. I thought it sounded like an old weird god-origin myth.

— Mo'anne & the River look like twins but the red marks on their face are slightly different. Mo'anne is depicted with her hair half-braided, and the River has her hair loose.
