The big one on the right? The first time I drew myself the way I look and feel comfortable.

I never actualy drew myself with my f/o's when I was younger, and I don't know what it was. Probably shame, probably the fact I didn't want an extra reason for people to judge me.

Welp, here I am, a young adult, finally saying fuck it, and giving myself full selfindulgence and seratonin, by drawing a villain being all lovey dovey with myself. 💕

And drawing him smiling like that? Really makes me happy... Even if this self-insert au will make him act out of character/not much like what he is in the show XD

Short: Told my therapist about using fiction as a coping mechanism, to lift myself up when I can't believe the truth, by projecting it onto a fictional character.

Her response? "That's is a great strategy!"

Long:

Been to my therapist last week and while we were talking she did ask me how I help myself when I am anxious/what techniques I use. And I told her that when things get tough I imagine characters or stories/scenarios similar to what I am experiencing, and projecting what I know is true, but when I say it to myself it sounds fake onto a character I can believe.

Example (gave her a shorter version because well, we have a time limit and I am a rambler. Learning to manage that and get my point across so we can find solutions):

"I didn't finish X, so I am worthless"

That is a lie. But it gets really tiring going "That's not true brain, stop being mean." and sometimes I just don't have the energy when my problem feels so so soooo much bigger and overwhelming and I can't believe myself when I say it. So I project it onto a character and have them say "That is not true."

And you guys, when she said "This is a great strategy." I was so taken aback I literally went "Really? óuò " because I was always told I need to stop doing that. It made me so so happy.

I had a really really shitty spiral a week ago and writing down a little f/o story made me feel much better. And it's just... So freaking good to know that Maladaptive daydreaming? Having f/o's? All okay and good as long as you know the line between a healthy coping mechanism and the unhealthy ones.

(it's also why I am terrified everytime I see the posts talking about how great "reality shifting" is... not my place to say how anyone should do things, it's their sandpit, but my thoughts are that this can cause a whoooole deal of problems later on, especially in periods of "my other coping mechanisms aren't working rn". So none of that for me thank you!)

So yeah... Just. Knowing that a coping mechanism that I finally have a name for, and has been helping me get through my days ever since I was a little kid is not something to be ashamed of, or something that is harmful to me feels... Really good. ouo
