These pictures of bridal crossdresser Karen Marie are from her simulated wedding in the mid-1990s.
A MOCK WEDDING is enacted by Pakistani girls. The “bride”, Raiza Khanum (who appears on LIFE’s cover) wears a gay head scarf used for festive events. To exchange rings is a local custom, not practiced through Islam. Photo caption, LIFE, 9 May 1955.
Bit of a dress up wedding with a chain and pendant filling in for a mang tikka.
The woman on the right of the “bride” wears the collared kameez popular in the 50s. And of course hair ribbons.
“TOM THUMB WEDDING” - a group of morose looking children in beautiful mock wedding clothes posing for a fantastic roaring 20s Tom Thumb Wedding. I have to wonder if the photographer was screaming at them because most of them look like they are about to burst into tears, with the exception of one beaming girl (four over from left) who seems to be enjoying herself. An amazing collection of cute/ sad faces, fashionable outfits and hairstyles.
"Tom Thumb Weddings" have been put on for in America for over a hundred years, and they are still being performed today in a manner largely unchanged from their 19th-century origins. The play takes its name and inspiration from Charles Stratton, aka "General Tom Thumb", a Connecticut-born man with dwarfism who made considerable fame performing in P.T. Barnum’s sideshow. In February 1863 he married Lavinia Warren, a fellow little person, in a posh New York ceremony dubbed the “Fairy Wedding." Afterwards scripts for putting on your own "Tom Thumb" wedding were sold by the thousands and the pageants became wildly popular.
Wales Mock Shoot
13th April
Wales is the first area I went to do my mock wedding shoots.
I used my cousin as my model for this one, a lot of this didn’t actually go to plan, the flowers were actually supposed to be a lot more vibrant, we tried to hand dye the flowers at my aunties but it didn’t work as well as I had hoped. You can see elements of blue in there which I actually think worked much better than the vibrant blue I was going for.
London
28th April 2018
For one of my final pieces for University I’m doing various mock wedding images, if you look back on my blog, you’re able to see that I have already done one of these in Wales.
My next big one away from Leicester was London.
I’ve always had a connection with London, I was born there but moved up to Leicester in 2000. So I wanted to do something that was personal but also create beautiful images.
Throughout the day we had a lot of fun, I had to keep my model in a upbeat mood to ensure that we got great images, I’ve had a brief look at all of the images I’ve taken and I’ve fallen in love with some of them, I’m so excited to sit down and edit all of the images. Keep an eye out for a more detail blog post that will showcase some of the work!
So, a few weeks ago my 16yo changed her relationship status on Facebook to “married to my bowl of spaghetti”. Yesterday I shot wedding photos for them! They are such a happy couple. I’m looking forward to mini meatballs, but they have no plans on being prego any time soon.
