As we live and interact with other people, we start to get influenced and impacted by them. Whether it is in a negative or positive way, a little or a lot, they can affect your life. For example, if you meet someone but they treat you badly, you could end up suffering. If someone treats you with love and compassion, you will become happy with your life. The people in your life can have a big impact on you.
In I Know why the Caged Bird Sings, there are many people who had a negative impact on Maya. They all treated her badly and unfairly but that did not stop her from staying strong and growing as a person. There were three main scenes that stood out to me which demonstrated how some people negatively impacted Maya. The first scene is the rape scene with Mr. Freeman. Turning up the radio up loud, too loud, he said, “If you scream, I’m gonna kill you. And if you tell, I’m gonna kill Bailey. The next scene is when Maya was forced to be called something else just because a white woman thought her name was too long. I fumed in the kitchen. That horrible woman would never have the chance to call me Mary because if I was starving I’d never work for her. I decided I wouldn’t pee on her if her heart was on fire. The third scene was when the white dentist would not fix Maya’s mouth even when he owed Momma. “Annie, my policy is I’d rather stick my hand in a dog’s mouth than a ni——’s.” He had never once looked at me. Because of all that negativity given to Maya by some people that she had in her life, she was not always happy. She went through a hard time throughout her whole life. She got raped at a young age (8 years old), forced to change her name for a short amount of time for someone she didn’t even like, and wasn’t given dental care when she really needed.
Similar to the story mentioned earlier, To Kill a Mockingbird shows some scenes that demonstrate how some characters negatively affected Scout. The first scene that I thought of was when Miss Caroline busted Scout for being literate. I suppose she chose me because she knew my name; as I read the alphabet a faint line appeared between her eyebrows, and after making me read most of My First Reader and the stock-market quotations from The Mobile Register aloud, she discovered that I was literate and looked at me with more than faint distaste. The second scene is when Jem and Scout go to Miss Maudie’s house to read to her but she greets them in a mean way. “So you brought that dirty little sister of yours, did you?” was her greeting. The third scene is when Jem tells Scout to start acting like a girl instead of a boy. After one altercation when Jem hollered, “It’s time you started bein’ a girl and acting right!” I burst into tears and fled to Calpurnia. A lot of people treat Scout unfairly mostly because she does not know a lot about what is going on around her. She got in trouble for knowing how to read when she is learning how to read in school, referred to as dirty, and told to stop being such a girl but then later on is told to start acting more like a girl. Since she is still young and naive, it does not affect her as much but will start to affect more as she grows up and matures.

They can either put you down or make you smile but it is your choice to let it bring you down or not. Scout and Maya got back up even though they were pushed down by the other mean people in their life. Even though many people impacted them in a negative way, they didn’t let that ruin them.

Compare & Contrast - 1st Draft
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and To Kill a Mockingbird are both very similar and different stories. Maya and Scout are two girls of different colors (colored and white) who were raised in the same time era with an older sibling. The living styles, however, are different. Scout is raised in a better-than-average family with more freedom and better living conditions. Maya was also raised in a better-than-average family with less freedom and more disadvantages because of her race and skin color. How they are raised is different as well. Scout is raised by Atticus, who is her father and not too strict. He is pretty laid-back yet teaches her good things. Maya is raised by her grandmother, Momma (Sister Henderson), who is very strict when it comes to God and christianity. She is not afraid to whip Maya and Bailey when they need it. The two girls have different personalities. Scout is a naive tomboy who doesn’t know much about the real world while Maya has more knowledge and experience of the around her. They suffer a lot in their life but that does not hold them down. They continue to go on with heir life and make the better of things.

In chapter 11 (page 147), I found an example of irony in paragraph 10. Mrs. Dubose died because of morphine. The irony in that is the doctor put her on that medication and she used it as a pain-killer. However, instead of making her feel better, the drug ended up killing her. The part that I annotated with a "?" is in chapter 13 (page 169) in the first paragraph.

1 - Write a developed paragraph analyzing something you are noticing that is similar or different to Caged Bird.
To Kill a Mockingbird is a bit similar to I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. The setting and some of the characters are similar, they both took place during the time when segregation was happening. Some of the characters are very religious, like Momma in IKWCBS. However, the two stories are also different because TKMB is in the point of view of a White girl while IKWCBS is in the point of view of a colored girl. The neighborhood is different and so are some of the other characters. The both stories contain similar messages about discrimination, whether it’s sexism or racism.
2 - Annotation: identify parts of the story that you don’t understand. Annotate it with “?” next to those parts.
One of parts that I annotated with the “?” is the part that Atticus praises Jem and says that he could be many things when he grows up because at first, Atticus seems disappointed in Jem but now he’s all proud. that confused me a little. The next part that I annotated was the part when Jem defended Mr. Nathan because I wasn’t sure of the reason why he did.
Mockingbird Theme Redo
In To Kill a Mockingbird, pride makes people do dumb things. Jem is the main character's brother and he appears a lot in this story. In most of the parts that he appears in, he is taking a bet and proving that he is brave. When Dill betted him that he could not go up to Boo Radley, he did not want to do it. But Dill kept pestering him and saying that he is scared. "'You're scared," Dill said, the first day. 'Ain't scared, just respectful,' Jem said. The next day Dill said, 'You're too scared even to put your big toe in the front yard.'" Since Jem's pride is so important to himself, he ends up doing something that hie is afraid of just to look good. It's not the first time he's done so, either. Pride is a pretty big part of our life as well, because many people want to be seen as a high person instead of a low one. Sometimes, they do dumb things to keep their pride and look good.
