Ah, a curious mind is among our midst, interested in knowing some of the Inn’s secrets that haven’t been disclosed to anyone ever before. How strange, but nevertheless, we aim to please all visitors of the BNHA Myths Zine Inn and will do our best to reveal what we can.
And so it appears that you have come with luck by your side, for the guardian of scrolls seems to have gone out for lunch.
We understand that potential applicants may be curious as to how we will be judging their work in order to pick out our official contributors, questions such as “what are the mods looking for in this zine?” may have popped into the minds of few, it may even pop up in our inbox from time to time..
To put it simply, we are looking for grammar, spelling, tone, and flow of the storytelling. We are looking out for many things which will be explained in this post. These criteria follow the similar trend found across all zines including writers
Now, the thing we’ve all been waiting for: the bulletpoint list!
General syntax
Grammar
Spelling
Punctuation
This tends to be the rule of thumb among judging criteria across all zines including writers, its aim is to ensure the pieces look as professional as possible.
Details and Descriptions
Hook - ability to hook readers from the beginning, especially those applying for brackets A and B!!
We need to be able to see that you can engross the reader even in short pieces of writing. It’s a double edged sword, you may have a passion for description based pieces, however if the get long-winded it may lose its intended effect.
Dialogue Style
Dialogue can be descriptive and must add to the story/characters whenever possible. This does not necessarily mean that single line dialogue is completely prohibited !!
An example of dialogue styles we are wary of: “Hey, what’s up?” / “Nothing much. You?” / “Been okay.”
We must be cautious about exceeding certain page limits in regards to the zine’s overall page count, as an increase in pages results in an increase in production costs. Unfortunately, it will be difficult to accommodate to particular writing styles. We will do our best to support a variety of styles to the best of our ability !!
Tone/Voice
Having your own distinct voice that separates you from other applicants, giving your work the element that has your signature on it.
We are also looking at the way in which writers handle and maintain the tone in particular scenes (such as those with high tension, grief, dramatic effect etc.).
Characterisation
This remains to be self explanatory, we understand everyone includes headcanons into their writing of particular characters and those are always welcomed !! We will be looking for a sense of the character,
Regardless, you can submit samples that are not BNHA related, for those we will take into account all the elements presented above, we will particular focus on your characterisation of those characters to get a sense of how you can write them.
This is what we’ll be looking for when we begin judging application responses, as stated before, this is a single blind review, in which none of the other mods will influence the decision of another during the process. Not until we collate each vote and select our final writers!!
Do any of the mods have examples of zines they've worked on before?
Hello!!
In fact, we do!! Each of us has been a contributor to an array of zines in the past, several of us are currently in some ongoing zines !!
We’re also rather happy with our line-up of mods as each of us has experience with the admin work behind zines, thus we’ve got a skilled group of individuals tackling parts of modding the Myths Zine!!
First up, Mod Ary has contributed to the following zines:
YOI zine Eat, Skate, Love
And an original zine: Sweet Girls
They have also helped create, manage, and write for an academic journal and they do freelance editing!
Our lovely mod Danie is participating for the first time on a zine! She’s a Graphic Design college student that loves illustration and animation, she hopes to participate in more zines in the future!
Next, Mod Dom has been a contributor to zines such as:
EraserMic Zine
BNHA: Level-Up
BNHA Mirrors zine
Disney x BNHA zine
Dom has not modded any fanzines, however, she has run a project that was sold locally!
Mod Fif has run multiple zines in the past, several BNHA ones and several from other fandoms including:
Wish: a Servamp Fairy Tale zine

BNHA Quirk Zine
Kacchako Zine

(upcoming) Heroine Mystique zine
So, rest assured dear nonny, we have an experienced group of mods ready to create a lovely zine :D
will you be sending acceptance emails only, or will the people who get rejected be contacted as well?
Don’t worry, we will be sending both acceptance and rejection emails! We know how bad it can feel when you never get contacted from a zine, not to mention it’s extremely unprofessional so we will indeed be informing everyone whether they were accepted or not.
Hello anon!As we are making sure we have enough time to review all applications, we will be sending emails between March 30-April 3! We will create a post once we start sending out emails. But as always, we will make sure to make an announcement if there are any changes!Thank you!- BNHA Myths Mod Team
What about urban myths, like the Hook Hand Man or Mothman or the Slit Mouth Woman or Chain Mail Myths???
Oh hi Anon!
Sorry for the delayed response! Urban myths are not going to be included. So the Hook Hand Man, Slit Mouth Woman, and Chain Mail myths - generally stories originating more from a specific encounter - will not be making an appearance in this zine.
However, the Mothman (along with other cryptids such as the Kraken, Bigfoot, Sea Serpents, etc.) are considered to be in the realm of mythological creatures and are fair game!
I've read your info post, but just one thing that keeps confusing me after rereading it five times XD But, does an artist have to collab with a writer? Or is it an option to do so or not?
Hi there! Doing a collab it’s totally optional
There will be a short survey within the artist application:
1) Your preference in being a standalone artist or a collaboration artist.
2) If an artist have a preference in working with a certain word bracket, while keeping in mind that the higher the bracket (such as Bracket 4), you will be expected to produce a little more (a mixture of cover arts and clean sketches).
Once you have been accepted, we will ask all collaborating artists to select their top three fic outlines presented by our collaborating writers anonymously. You might not receive your first choice though!
