heyyyy, how are ya feeling? a bit better then when your wisdom teeth were first removed hopefully? i still have my wisdom teeth, along with my tonsils, is it weird i still have my tonsils? -Mod Hibiki
Well it is easier to eat without them and I'm not biting the side of my cheek
Don't worry, I still have my tonsils so you aren't alone
(This ended up so long so most of the opinion under cut)
Initial Impression: Honestly I wanted his bunny hoodie so bad that it was the original reason I looked into the game since DeSu2 was the first Devil Survior game that I played. So needless to say I thought his design was pretty cute.
Impression Now: If you have picked up nothing else from this blog you will know I think Hibiki is a massive troll and I love him for it. Some of his dialogue is off the walls bonkers and it’s refreshing to be able to play as a protagonist who tries to be the comic relief of the group to keep everyone’s spirits up. His ability and willingness to reach out to everyone no matter their stance or personality or down right hostility at times is impressive. On top of that I enjoy his optimism in the face of ridiculous odds. Like if the entire world going to hell wasnt enough now you gotta face the very laws of the universe have fun Hibiki.
Favorite scene: All of his troll moments hold a nice place in my heart, and if you’ve seen my Yamato post you know that his fate events are also so good. But Hibiki becoming an administrator with Daichi crying, and the rest of the Hotsuins & Alcor just sadly accepting it. That tore out my heart.
Favorite relationship: Yamahibi ( To save you my ramblings again check out my Yamato post here ) Daichi, Io, and Alcor are also top faves for interactions with Hibiki.
Favorite headcanon:
My primary one is that Hibiki has major Martyr complex/need to protect everyone at all times even at risk to himself. This might just be me reading into the Triangulum arc dialogue way too much but a decent amount of people mention that Hibiki is pushing himself pretty far and he should rely on them. Off the top of my head I remember Daichi expressing serious concern if you try to write off you phasing out of existence, and Hinako and Otome also express concerns.
The culmination of this is in the True end and the Administrator end of the Triangulum arc. In the true end Hibiki puts his trust in not only in his friends but all of humanity. He has to put control in other people’s hands rather than take it upon himself. In comparison the Administrator arc is Hibiki succumbing to his need to protect everyone. He can’t stand the idea of anyone else having to suffer the fate of being an administrator thus takes it upon himself. On top of that, one of the reasons that Hibiki chose The Administrator route is being Alcor and Hibiki are scared of what could happen in the other routes. They believe they need to take the fate of the world upon their own hands, and their refusal to rely on others is highlighted in the way they keep it a secret.
Unpopular opinion: Hibiki has an underlying manipulative streak and iron spine underneath his joking manner. You get in the way of his plans to protect his friends or achieve his goals, and he’ll mess you up.
Story idea:
To be perfectly honest with you all, I actually did start writing a Hibiki centric fic a few years back. It was going to be a mass re-write of the entire game with internal dialogue commentary from Hibiki. It included extra scenes in between main story event to help flesh out concepts and relationships not delved into much in the game. There was also some deviations from the original game to keep it from being too much like just reading the script, especially towards the end of the game and in the Triangulum arc. Basically it was a enhanced let’s play in text form kinda. The crux of the comedy was going to be from Hibiki developing the most ill timed crush of all time, by falling for the very sketchy government leader of the very sketchy government demon organization in the middle of the goddamn apocalypse. I stand by my opinion that Hibiki is a disaster Bisexual. Even so I was debating a version without that whole relationship plot line.
Mostly I wanted to explore more of the what the story hinted at:
-How exactly Hibiki got so talented with demons (actually communicating with and learning from the demons in his party, as well as a healthy dose of mythology knowledge)
- More about the apocalypse and it’s effects on the population. Since the game kinda drops off emphasizing it towards the later game besides some mentions of Ronaldo’s rioters.
-Why demons are attacking humans and how they work?
-What kind of backstory must Hibiki have to want to please and get along with so many different people?
-Also just a few extra scenes like Hibiki getting rightly pissed at Yamato and Ronaldo for trying to murder his friends. Or being suspicious of Miyako more in the Triangulum arc. Or actually freaking out about his friends getting written out of existence.
But you guys probably don’t want to hear me ramble forever about that. Other than that fic I like the idea of the shenanigans of the Yamahibicor road trip.
A more dorky idea is that Administrator Hibiki uses a bit of his soul to turn Arcturus, Denebola, And Spica into creatures a bit more akin to Alcor. It ends up not works out quite right with them turning into rowdy kids, each with their own personality and Hibiki ends up being a very out of his depths surprise dad. (With Alcor helping as best he can)
Initial Opinion: Oh cute a kitty eared blank protagonist
Opinion now: Suprisingly an interesting protagonist. The more limited scope of his dialogue compared to Hibiki, gives you more of a firm idea of his personality. A more collected, natural leader type with a great deal of empathy. The history behind Kazuya with the entire throne of Bel and Abel reincarnation thing is fascinating to learn about and expand upon in stories. Also he has kickass capes in Law and Chaos and I can respect that in a character. Bow down to your Kitty Eared Tyrant.
Favorite Scene: Being the Chaos Hoe that I am killing Metatron in The No Killing Chaos route. Its a surprisingly triumphant ending for a Chaos route in an SMT game and honestly is one of the more uplifting ends in the whole game. Also you get to command an entire demon horde to go fight a corrupt deity and that is just badass.
Favorite Relationship: Tie between Atsuro (The one true bro) and Naoya (His actual bro)
Favorite Headcannon: Kazuya had trouble emoting and communicating with others as a kid due to being an imperfect reincarnation of Abel and the other parts of the Original Bel saping away at what he had of a soul in preparation for the war. This lead to him being isolated at an early age for being more than a little odd. While he got better as he developed more as his own person, this is the reason why he’s so loyal to people Yuzu and Atsuro for being some of his few friends early on. This is also why he shows options to convey such faith in Naoya despite his actions throughout the game, because Naoya looked after him when he was a shell of a kid.
Unpopular Opinion: another opinion I’m not exactly sure is unpopular or not, but I’m not a huge fan of what they did with kazuya in the manga. His level headed personality and aloofness was pretty fair but the way that Kazuya dealt with The whole Naoya situation rubbed me the wrong way. Maybe it’s just my bias towards Naoya speaking but the whole ending of the manga kinda felt like kazuya writing all of Naoya’s issues for the sake of normality.
Story idea: Throughout the battle with god the personalities of the other Bels do an annoying peanut gallery style commentary on all Kazuya’s choices. Or a much less comedic fic about Kazuya slowly recovering Abel’s and his other life times memories, and coming to terms with what that means for him as a being and his humanity in general.
sometimes I forget Yamato is a kid because of how he acts and when I remember it gives me whiplash
Honestly same here lol. The man acts like he’s a 30 year old grizzled veteran when he’s actually a baby faced high schooler. The Hotsuin family really said no childhood rights for Yamato. Since he expresses confusion at the mere concept of friends, I can bet just introducing basic childhood games to him like Hopscotch would be a bit of an odd novelty for him.
Can you do a character opinon on crazy scientist girl fumi
Our resident Mad Scientist Fumi
Initial impression: Originally I thought she was going to be part of the villains with the initial mind control fight. I was under the assumption there would be a background organization that kicked off the apocalypse before I learned it was just Polaris being an ass. I thought she’d be one of the sullen maybe demonic underlings of this organization or like a mid manager.
Impression now: She was honestly way more comedic than I ever expected. Fumi is pretty funny to me and I enjoy her fate events and interactions with the other JPs ladies. Her personality allowed for her moments of info dumping about The Septentriones and Polaris to be interesting where in other games it might be a bit of a slog. I like how her extreme intelligence gives her a balance of both benefits and flaws in her quick wit but rather dismissive treatment of others at times, but overall I just really enjoy her very laxidasical way of dealing with the literal end of the world.
Favorite scene: Trumpter “Negotiaions” Enough said. (Runner Up: The whole debacle of Fumi trying to take off Hibiki’s hoodie only for a bunch of people to walk in on them and get all the wrong ideas. That had me laughing)
Favorite Headcannon: Fumi continues writing letters to her past host family and keeping them up to date with how she’s been. At least as up to date as she can working for a secret government organization.
Unpopular Opinion: I don’t really think I have an unpopular Opinion for Fumi. I guess I also semi ship her with Otome which seems to be a rare pair within the fandom.
Favorite relationship: The dynamic between the JPs girl’s triad is so wholesome. Otome’s fate events in the Triangulum arc really cemented that for me. They all balance each other out. With Fumi being logical but wreckless, Makoto cautious but supportive and protective, and otome being a care taker but also an instigator of whatever she finds funny. Each of them alternate causing trouble and looking after each other and I find that sweet.
Story Idea: Fumi creates a body swapping machine, insanity insues.
if you go on the tag #naoya minegishi the entire thing is just you and @desu-shitpost
(But honestly shout out to @desu-shitpost for their great content. If you haven’t checked them out and enjoy the jokey content I make, You’ll adore their blog.)
For the character ask meme, Naoya/Kazuya/Hibiki? (you don't have to do all three, just in case someone already asks for those characters and you haven't answered)
Sorry for taking so long with this one
Since this is a three character request for three characters I love, i will be doing all three just in separate posts.
But first off Naoya, the universe’s first man who just wasn’t Abel to compete.
First impression: Ah our scheming white haired anime boy has arrived, but why does he look like a bucket of water was thrown on his hair? But then his voice actor spoke and I was like IM IN LOVE???? I don’t know what it was about his overclocked VA but I really liked what they did for his voice.
Impression now: OKAY I KNEW HE WOULD BE A SCHEMING BASTARD BUT I NEVER EXPECTED THE EXTENT. I’m honestly impressed how much he predicted and how much he set up in this game. That he turned around his curse into a weapon to get back at god is so impressive. Millennias of careful planning and still leaving Kazuya the choice to willingly come with him rather than forcing his hand what a king. The whole Cain and Abel backstory adds such an interesting layer to his character and actions that I love seeing different people’s takes on. He also provides such a more sympathetic and personal reason for taking the Chaos route than a lot of smt games. I fully support his efforts to kill god. I’m chaos biased I can’t pretend.
Favorite moment: Oh boy that’s a three way tie between his breakdown in law route, saving you in Yuzu’s route, and the declaration of staying by Kazuya’s side in Chaos. His breakdown really gets to the heart of his complicated relationship with Kazuya and his own issues with himself and his curse. And as mentioned in my Yamato post, I love emotionally fraught scenes and that counts. Every single plan Naoya had made is tumbling down around him and he’s just desperately trying anything to stop his brother from following the same god that manipulated the two of them.
On the other hand The Yuzu route Okuninushi rescue is a heartwarming moment that shows how much Naoya does care for Kazuya and the others. (Although I am a bit perturbed by Okuninushi saying that Naoya only changed then, like the man has grown so much from his original self as Cain but his own years of reflection. Like give Naoya some credit here) And of course the declaration in Chaos has a similar note of fondness, though it’s doubly underscored by Naoya’s joy of finally having everything going according to plan and the looming happiness of finally getting back at god and having his brother back. It’s nice to see his plans finally all coming together.
They’re just all good scenes. I can’t decide.
Story Idea: Id really Love a fic That delved into what Naoya would do if Kazuya started slowly remembering his past lives during the war against god. Obviously Naoya is terrified of how Kazuya May perceive him once he learns the truth as shown through his very many redirects about the topic, especially in Chaos route. So I’m really curious if he would still try to hold it off as long as he could or if he would be more forthright with a Kazuya already in the thick of fighting against god. It could be a really interesting character study fic.
Unpopular Opinion: I’m not the biggest fan of him being romantically evolved with Loki. Mostly because the content I’ve seen with them at least has seemed a bit dubcon which is not my thing. On top of that I’m not of the opinion that he killed his parents to get to live with Kazuya (a hc I’ve seen floating around). I think his relationship with Abel is too complicated for him to be so decisive as to kill someone to interact with him again.
Fave relationship: Kazuya, hands down its just so ripe for drama. Though the apprenticeship with Atsuro is close second.
Fave Headcanon: Naoya was a very mennacing but doting sibling to Kazuya when he lived with him. He looked out for kazuya in his own way
