a while back i described the "mask" of peckie as "the sheepskin" and now i'm thinking about it because if we describe peckie at the murder of her parents as a wolf and then the persona of peckie as a sheepskin then she would actually be "putting on" the sheepskin for the inverse reason most would think of a wolf in sheeps clothing.

a wolf in sheeps clothing is a dangerous person trying to be softer so that they can entrap, right? peckie is trying to be softer so she isn't a danger to other people or even like. annoying or mildly uncomfortable to other people. this also makes her kind of intolerant to personal discomfort which is really funny for a supposed punk person? there's a lot of hangups peckie has about masculinity and visible disability that isn't really addressed because technically no one Knows she has those beliefs. or if she expresses them they're easily waved aside or interpreted in a better light. it's like in this ideal of becoming a sheep to become a better person she becomes a worse person. can someone kill her (heh.)

🐾 i think the most fascinating thing about vic and ligeia and whatever romance-adjacent thing that's going on with them is they're such. opposing characters in possibly every way. but what i'm going to bring up here is cao.

as mod sol said. ligeia hates kids! cao isn't revived out of any kindness or love in her own heart, but rather her affection for hecuba and desiring to alleviate hecuba's guilt (and in some sense, to have a kind of bargaining chip over hecuba). cao is at most a tool, and at worst, a favor to forget. cao's name is literally lauding himself as her champion, like a paladin of a god, and she could give one to zero shits about him! he doesnt even live at her house! ligeia so often is in this position of a father in a literal sense, finalizing and rebirthing so many children, but doesnt like any of them, or act in any parental way (the reasons for that are obviously complex but thats not necessarily the point)

vic, on the other hand, doesnt really consider himself parental in any way, and barely responsible, but he's probably the most natural and normal father in the entire story. vic gets sprung out of a truly horrific prison, tortured for five years and powerless (literally slowly dying and getting his insides fucked up daily by his necromancer friends so he doesnt die for good), and immediately starts teaching the freshly revived and traumatized nineteen year old at the collision headquarters how to cook. who is doing it like him. i think vic is set apart from most of the other parents in selva because of the simple fact that cao is just a person to him. he's not a replacement. he's not a bargaining chip. he's not an accident to feel guilt about forever. he's just a kid who needs some help, and vic can surely sympathize. in that way, him not viewing himself as paternal or mentorial is exactly what makes him so good at being both of those for cao
