Shopify.com homepage signup modal
Our team went through some efforts to make sure the signup modal dialog was easily accessible via keyboard from the 3 places it’s triggered. Focus follows and returns to the trigger when the modal is opened/closed. Modal includes aria role and label, as well as accessible form fields, hints, and error states. Let me know if you’ve got any feedback! :)
Shopify, a nearly 10-year-old online selling platform, is well designed and built with accessibility in mind. Why can’t more sites do this?!
On the homepage, skip links and visible focus states work very well. I was a little unclear how to use the popup “more” link in the main navigation, but it expands a small list of links that are easy to get past. Where the page really shines, and I’m so glad Monica submitted it, is the signup dialog, triggered by the “Get started” link. Upon open, focus is sent directly to the first form input. Keyboard and screen reader users can move easily through the rest of the fields, which are all labeled. It’s intuitive and I suspect it probably has a great conversion rate. Nicely done!
