how do u guys feel about mixed natives? im mixed native and white but im not in touch with my culture. i dont think my % is very big either. i'm not about to go into a bunch of religous and cultural things i don't belong to, but am i considered a native/poc?
I don’t know about modbot, but I am a mixed native. I am a little over a quarter native on my dads side and white on my moms side (and my dad’s dads side) so I have no problem with mixed natives! But as I’ve said before, dealing with percentages can be a bit tricky. And it also depends on your tribe. I’d say if you aren’t sure which tribe you belong to then you should either try to figure that out or, and I don’t mean to sound rude, don’t get yourself involved? Not all natives and tribes are the same, and all the cultural and religious aspects of native culture is very heavily dependent on your tribe.
But overall, mixed natives are totally fine, a lot of the natives I know are mixed. And as for you asking if you’re considered native, that is not something I can answer for you. If you don’t think you have a lot of native blood in you, then I would say you probably shouldn’t claim that you are. On the other hand though, I don’t know anything about your heritage or your blood. That should really be a conversation you have with your family and/or a tribal leader or representative if you have one. -Mod S
Bot here! This is a subject that is very delicate. The vast majority of natives, especially natives living outside of reservations, are mixed because of the colonization and assimilation and ultimately the gradual attempted eradication of our people. We are not at fault for this, and there is nothing wrong with mixed natives trying to maintain and protect their culture and identity in a reality that tries to make it something that exists only in the past. This is a separate issue from the white people who try to adopt the culture they oppress as a trend. This isn't specific to you, but as a person of minute native blood who has not been a part of their culture, if you are not supporting other natives and listening to other natives, and instead are benefiting from them while oppressing their culture, it is frowned upon to adopt the identity of native. If you are using the identity to appropriate the culture, especially of tribes that you aren’t a part of (regardless of how native you are, some (most, even) aspects of native culture are specific to one or more groups), please seek another hobby. It is entirely possible to learn about native culture or to try to learn more about your own native ancestors or the natives in your area without identifying with the culture or ethnicity as a whole. It's really a fine line to tread, you just have to sort out your intentions. -Mod Bot
