This #FarmFriday, we’re visiting a model electric farm from the Southern California Edison Company. This illustration from an undated pamphlet possibly issued around 1932 (or as late as around 1950) aimed to entice the region’s agricultural sector into electrifying farm production with promises to “stop those chores from robbing us of our natural vigor, our youthful spirit, our joy of living.” Sign me up. This pamphlet is Pam 2009.468 in Hagley Library’s Published Collection Department’s collection of pamphlets and trade catalogs. The third day of Pongal is dedicated to cattle and is called Mattu Pongal. People offer prayers to the bulls, cows and other farm animals. Cows and bulls have always held a special place in India. Cows give nourishing milk while bulls and oxen help plough the fields. Thus, Mattu Pongal is a day when cattle are given pride of place. The farmers honour their cattle friends by celebrating it as a day of thanks-giving to them. 

On this celebratory, joyous day cattle are washed, their horns are painted and they are fed with Pongal and given a well deserved day of quiet and rest.

“MANITOBA SUGAR BEET TESTS ARE SUCCESSFUL,” Winnipeg Tribune. September 29, 1931. Page 3. --- The sugar beet potentialities of Manitoba were again successfully demonstrated today when a party of 30 member of the Industrial Development board witnessed harvesting and loading operations of sugar beets at the experimental plots at Headingiy. The quality of the product is rated as high as any grown on the North American continent. 

The board has arranged for visit to Van Home's farm, East Selkirk. Friday, leaving Winnipeg at 4 p.m. The public are Invited to make acquaintance with the latest developments in the handling of beet.

Hon. A. Prefontaine, minister of agriculture, J. H. Evans, deputy minister, and Theodore Kipp, chairman of the Industrial Development board, together with R. J. Shore, chairman of the sugar beet committee were present at Headingly this morning.
