When in Braavos
by Kurohitenshi
After Jon’s military enlistment is done, he moves to Braavos after getting scouted by Tycho Nestoris from the Iron Bank. There he reconnects with his friend Robb’s little sister Arya as she attends the world-famous Academy of Black and White, pursuing dance and mummery in the Art Department. Jon: Look, Edric. I want to apologize for everything I did and said. For what it’s worth, I really like having you around.
Ned Dayne: No, you don't.
Jon: I know. I have dreams where I staple your fingers to your face. But Arya likes you so I'm coping.
Jonrya Week 2020: Day 2 - Dark
The day when Jon receives his Hogwarts letter becomes one of the happiest days in his life. He would be able to leave behind the stigma of being a bastard and start fresh in the infamous Wizarding School in Scotland.
The best part about it is his chance to escape the cold eyes of his Aunt Catelyn Stark who seems to hate him for as long as he had been alive.
The worst part would be leaving his cousins behind: Robb, Bran, and Rickon, even Sansa. The twins Robb and Sansa received no letter this year although they weren’t bothered, Robb being a lord’s heir and Sansa more concerned with fashion and boys.
Most of all, Jon would miss Arya, his favourite cousin and best friend. They are a few years apart but there was no one in their family who were as close as they were. Parting is terrible for them on September 1st but he gifts her his mother’s old wand so she could practice magic in secret, hoping that she would follow him to Hogwarts one day. The memory of her laughter warms him on the long journey north.
Jon is sorted into Slytherin and, not knowing much about it since Uncle Ned wouldn’t talk about magic much, is severely disappointed when he finds out that most of them are bigoted and cruel. Owls between him and Arya become the best part of his day. They write each other almost every day, talking about everything they could. Thankfully, before the end of the year, he makes friends with boys he had first had trouble with at the beginning of the year: Grenn and Pyp. He also takes the awkward Samwell under his wing.
The year when Arya arrives with him in Hogwarts, Jon is beside himself with happiness but also trepidation. He wants her to join him in Slytherin with all his heart but he also hopes that whatever House she gets is the one that will make her happy.
Arya is sorted to Slytherin, much to his relief. She gets so excited at the prospect of being in the same House. From there on out, Hogwarts becomes like their home. They never miss a meal together and Arya introduces him to all the friends she’s made from all the Houses. Jon sneaks her to Hogsmeade and they buy and eat all the sweets they could afford from Honeydukes, until they’re sick to their stomachs. That year, for the first time in years, Slytherin wins the House Cup.
In Arya’s second year, a boy who was Jon’s age transfers from Durmstrang. Ramsay Bolton always has a cruel smirk on his face and wherever he was, strange things keep happening to people. Jon suspects that he practices dark magic but he never finds proof.
That year, students start dying one at a time, all of them with muggle connections. Ramsay has gathered a legion of following among the Slytherin students and they call themselves the Death Eaters.
As he grows in power, Ramsay becomes obsessed with Arya, teasing her mercilessly. Arya stands up for herself, as brave as any Griffindor, but this only amuses Ramsay. Enraged, Jon beats Ramsay in a magical duel and, in obvious revenge, Arya disappears from her bed one morning and isn’t seen for days.
Jon goes mad, his rage uncontrollable. He knows it’s Ramsay’s doing and he goes so far as to try to cast the Cruciatus curse on him. With the help of Grenn, Pyp, Sam, and Arya’s friends Ned and Meera, they track her whereabouts to the Chamber of Secrets. Jon defeats Ramsay in another wizard’s duel but the other boy manages to escape the school and any punishments he would have been given.
Jon is in tears when he finally has Arya safe in his arms. Arya is extremely shaken and claims to not know what had happened to her. But later on, Jon catches her when she’s lost in her thoughts, her mood dark. Whenever she gets nightmares, she quietly slips into his bed, as if they were still small children. Jon is thankful that he has his own room as a Slytherin prefect.
Years later, the world finds out that Ramsay Bolton has become a Dark Wizard who wanted to destroy the world, one muggle at a time. War breaks out.
A year after Arya finishes school, when they’ve settled in a flat they share together in London, Jon receives a letter from Ramsay Bolton. The letter is very brief but the words wound him like knives. It‘s as if Jon’s world is turned upside down.
I want my bride back.
Jon holds her closer afterwards, cherishing every precious moment he has with her, hoping against hope that they would be strong enough together against the Dark Lord.
Jonrya Week 2020: Day 4 - Mythology
A year after Aunt Catelyn dies mysteriously during a charity event at the Crossing, Uncle Ned disappears during a hunting trip with his friend Robert. One by one all over Westeros, the Stark children also keep vanishing until Winterfell falls empty. Jon is forced to retrieve the only remaining Stark cousin he has left, out of concern for her safety.
His favourite cousin Arya studies at a prestigious boarding school in Braavos. She is happy to see Jon at first but is upset that she has to leave school indefinitely. However, this quickly changes when she learns about what has happened to the rest of their family. She is prepared to do everything to get them back.
A mysterious demon tries to kidnap her the night before their flight back to Winterfell. He introduces himself as Ramsay, a demon prince from the Underworld. He has been watching Arya since she was born and has now come to collect her to be his bride. Arya fights him with Needle, the rapier that Jon gave to her when she was only nine years old. But her little blade is no match for his inhuman strength. He holds her down and marks her hand with a demonic knife. Jon bursts into her bedroom just in time to shoot the demon with Valyrian steel bullets. Ramsay is quick to dodge but it still grazes his shoulder which spews black blood. Wary of the unexpected danger, he disappears immediately with a glare at Jon.
Jon and Arya fly back to the North and try to return to Winterfell but the demon Ramsay and his cronies have taken over. Too powerless against the supernatural forces of the demon, they go on the road instead, trying to find the rest of the Starks. To make things worse, because of Ramsay’s mark on her hand, Arya seems to become a magnet to supernatural creatures like ghosts, vampires, and spirits. She also begins to have vivid dreams where she thinks she may be looking through the eyes of various animals, but mostly the wolves around Winterfell.
Their bond becomes even deeper with each passing day as they’re forced to travel and fight their enemies all the time. They do almost everything together, including sharing hotel rooms and beds at the end of the day. The memories they start to make are of favourite playlists as they ramble along endless roads, small town diners, endless coffee stops, pizza, alcohol, the clean smell of soap on each other’s skin, and just falling asleep next to each other in cheap motels while bingeing their favourite shows.
The search for the Starks is almost hopeless because there are no clues. One day, after they gain the demon-slaying direwolves Ghost and Nymeria, and the ancient Valyrian steel swords Ice and Dark Sister, they decide to return to Winterfell to confront Ramsay and take back their home.
Ramsay has a proposition for Jon: give Arya to him so that she could be his bride in the Underworld and in return, the rest of the Starks will be set free, including Jon’s mother Lyanna who died a long time ago.
Arya is prepared to sacrifice herself for the greater good but Jon is not. He never will be. And so the battle begins.
Jonrya January 2020: Day 6 - Soulmates
For as long as she’s been alive, Arya has been having vivid dreams about distant places and ancient people she didn’t know. She never understood it before as a child and it had been traumatic as she relived war, hunger, violence, and loss even as she sat through school lessons or played with her friends.
But there were good things too like the feel of soft fur of a giant wolf under her fingers, or a graceful dance with a sword, the smell of the baking bread in a castle’s kitchens, the hundreds of flowers in the godswood in Spring, and most importantly the family she had in her dreams with loving parents and siblings she didn’t have in her own life. But it was one boy that she loved the most in that life, a brother who became a cousin, and finally a husband and the father to the many children they had. In that past life, they became a King and Queen after the end of war.
In this life, Arya was the complete opposite. She had been adopted as a child but they seemed to lose interest in her when she became a teenager. Thankfully, she had her pack in Ned, Gendry, Hot Pie, Lommy, and Weasel. Together, they went through University, work, and life’s drama together.
One day, a wealthy man in a crisp suit that costs more than her entire wardrobe knocks at her door. Arya is dumbfounded for a moment at the familiarity of his face before she hears what he actually has to say. He claims that she is his long lost cousin who had been presumed dead during her biological parents’ car accident. The vehicle had sunk into a lake and they never found the baby. But the man claims that Arya’s DNA from the orphanage had matched the baby’s from years ago. And she even looks like Jon’s own mother Lyanna when she had been younger.
Arya is stunned to hear that the man wants her to move into Dragonstone Manor with him since they were the last remaining kin alive.
Gendry, of course, thinks that the man wants her to be his sex slave.
Instead, Arya tries to be rational while giving the situation the benefit of doubt. She’s seen the man’s face a million times before in her dreams and as if the gods were being playful, they even have the same names as in the past. He was Jon Targaryen and, from her true birth certificate and matching DNA records, she was not Arya Snow but Arya Stark.
Arya follows her instincts and decides to learn more about Jon. And so Jon is patient and complies with her wishes.
Every day, they have coffee in the morning, lunch near her campus, and supper at all of Jon’s favourite restaurants. They sometimes watch films, plays, or wander around gardens, museums and observatories. Once, they even go to the beach after exams week. Arya couldn’t keep her eyes off his body, which has none of the scars of his past self.
When they’re not together, they’re always messaging each other, sending cute and funny things to make each other laugh. Suddenly, they even have playlists for everything they do together from hiking in the woods, to playing with his dogs. Arya even introduces Jon’s dogs to her lone grumpy cat Balerion.
Later on as she’s sharing her stories about Jon, Ned rolls his eyes good-naturedly and tells her she and Jon may as well be dating, which makes her flush and protest in denial.
Jon is charming and loving. Just like in her dreams, he spoils her with gifts. She doesn’t know how he knows all her favourite flowers. But one day, as they’re having wine after dinner in the manor, he confesses that he remembers everything too about a life they once shared as King and Queen, as husband and wife.
He goes on his knees and presents to her a little sword that she has only seen in dreams. Needle!
“Marry me,” Jon asks in a hoarse voice. “Share a life with me like all the lives we’ve lived together. Be my wife, and let me be your husband.”
Her heart flutters and just like in the past, Arya throws her arms around his neck.
“Yes,” she answers happily. “A thousand times yes!”
Jonrya Week 2020: Day 5 - Wounds
Jon Targaryen was completely crushed three years ago when his favourite little cousin Arya got lost in the Ruby Ford at the Trident after a suspicious incident including Joffrey Lannister and Sansa. No matter how hard the authorities tried, she was never found again. This led her father Ned to die of a broken heart.
Presently, he lives in Winterfell with his cousins Robb, Bran, and Rickon, as well as their foster brother Theon Greyjoy. Sansa, the eldest, moved to the Vale to live with her Aunt Lysa because her current boyfriend Harry Hardyng lives there. Jon’s mother Lyanna has been helping Aunt Cat out as she grieves her husband.
One evening, a child with close-cropped hair crosses his path in the Wolfswood while running away from sinister-looking adults with panic. Jon sneaks the child into the castle and his room. Taking a closer look under the glow of a lamp, Jon realises that the child is actually Arya, driving him to tears.
Arya doesn’t talk much at first and seems to have forgotten a lot of things. Jon wonders where she’s been all this time. Slowly, he comes to know her story as she reveals it little by little.
Arya had escaped a secret cult that kidnaps and brainwashes children into committing all sorts of atrocities. She’s been kept a prisoner all this time, as they force her to use her innate warging ability to go into the Underworld using various avatars. There are horrible things there, monsters from the North’s ancient history. The most heinous wants her, as if he knows her from a previous life. He is the leader of an undead army. They call him the Night King.
And now her kidnappers are on her trail. Worse, this organisation is extremely connected, with the most powerful bank funding it. Even the government is in its pocket. They will stop at nothing to have Arya back in their clutches for she is their greatest weapon.
Jon swears to protect her from them and to do that, he must first keep her a secret. So she stays in his room where he brings her food, talks to her, and just holds her when she cries. He also gives her a sword from the vaults so that she could protect herself: it is an ancient heirloom called Needle.
Most of all, he’s supportive and caring and tries to make her happy. He even calls her pretty, reassuring her as she looks at her short hair in front of a mirror, because she still remembers Sansa and her friends who used to bully her and call her ugly names. Jon tells her that she can now grow her hair long and like before, he will mess it no matter the length. This makes her smile, causing him to smile back. There is warmth inside his chest.
Soon, Robb, Theon, and Bran find out about her and they all give Jon a piece of their mind for keeping her a secret from them. Still, they keep her a secret for as long as they could.
But soon, the fragile gate that divides their world from the Underworld crumbles and one by one, the wights and White Walkers emerge, intent on revenge against the city that defeated them. They’re forced to tell adults but thankfully his mother Lyanna is a fighter through and through, and Uncle Benjen, who is a cop, is staunchly on their side.
They soon discover that with the exception of Theon, all the Stark children could warg, with Bran being the strongest. This includes Jon. Soon they’re fighting as powerful direwolves from the Lands of Always Winter, ripping wights to shreds with their teeth. It is Bran and Arya who ultimately close the gate together, keeping away the Night King from their world.
The days after are tough as the adults protect Arya from the cult. Uncle Benjen manages to broker a deal with them so she could go back to a normal life.
Arya goes to school for the first time in over three years. She’s decent at it, having been taught by tutors even in captivity. She and the boys hang out together and sometimes they even include the baby Rickon. They have endless days of playing Dungeons and Dragons, Atari, biking in the Wolfswood, or just listening to Rock and Roll.
But it is Jon she goes to at the end of the day, needing his quiet comfort as she’s plagued with nightmares. Jon is secretly happy despite the circumstances. He will always have a place for her next to him.
Thankfully, the biggest problem they have the next year is the school’s Snow Ball. The rest of the boys find dates, but Jon goes directly to Arya and asks her to be his.
Arya smiles a rare smile and says yes.
Jonrya Week 2020: Day 3 - Touch
At university in Kings Landing, Jon takes up photography as a hobby. He takes shots of everything that catches his eye but it’s all so mediocre in his opinion.
When he travels to Winterfell to visit his extended family during school break, he’s surprised at how much his favourite little cousin Arya has grown, and how she’s growing even more beautiful every day. Jon asks her to show him the best places in the North to take photos. They use his mother’s antique motorcycle or borrow Uncle Benjen’s truck as they go to far off mountains, forests, lakes, and even the sea. He gets excellent photos, but the best ones are those of her, his muse. She’s amused but is a willing model for his photography. Jon aches to get rid of the camera between them, longing to know the feel of her touch.
Soon, they’re away from Winterfell for days on end, getting drunk, watching films in bed, or just snuggling together with Ghost and Nymeria by the warmth of a fire. The longer they spend time together, the harder it becomes to resist touching her. They already share motel beds, kiss playfully, tickle fight, and cuddle each other to sleep...
What’s one more kiss?
