Since everyone in Phighting already has musical sound-bites as their "talking" sound effects, I like to imagine that the Inphernal language is more similar to bird chirps than human language. You know how in the songs The Flipside and See You On, you can hear Valk and Dom singing? Yeah those are just their actual voices

As an extension of this, singing is highly valued in Inphernal cultures! Many Inphernals will actual make signature music motifs for themselves, either as a nickname or to use as a status symbol. The MVP jingles that play for each Phighter is each of their own self-coined motifs!

Also you know those fun facts about baby penguins remembering their mother's calls so they can pick her out from the others? That's basically how Inphernals recognize each other. Face-blindness is VERY common among Inphernals, so outside of recognizing horn shapes and hues, a person's chirps helps distinguish them

Language headcanons my beloved <3 <3 <3

There are 5 main languages!!!!

Blackrockian. Sounds like it should be screamed at you, rough and harsh. It tends to bleed over into other languages the person speaks, so you can easily identify someone from Blackrock.

Three main regional dialects.

Capital: a little more refined and consistent than the rest. Zuka and Subspace.

Outer reaches: rougher so full of slang its basically impossible to understand, even if it's your first language. Medkit (nowadays his accent is so mixed it's basically impossible to tell where he came from.)

Northern mountains: The only different between this and the outer reaches is this one can pronounce the 'th' in 'the'. Hyperlaser.

Trivia: they don't have a future tense, so native speakers tend to struggle with the idea of something having not happened yet.

Templan. The opposite of Blackrockian in the way it sounds. It has almost a completely different consonant and vowel inventory!

Two main dialects, but a third is forming.

Central: the basic dialect. Scythe, the Broker, and Katana.

Ashfalls: The volcanic range The Banlands is in is right near a bit of Lost Temple, and the wind tends to blow from that direction, coating the land in ash. It sounds to a Central speaker the same way a Texan accent sounds to us. Interestingly, Father Overseer. It gave the Church so much whiplash when he spoke Templan in front of them for the first time.

The wranglers and the Church also have distinct differences in their dialect, even if they were spawned in the same location. The wranglers are closer to the standard dialect, but the Church has begun a language drift, as they mimic the way their leader speaks.

Trivia: the hardest language to learn, especially if you're from Blackrock.

Thieve's Den (couldn't come up with an interesting name). Very similar to Japanese, elegant and flowing.

Only two important dialects.

Darkage: the Darkage clan have their own dialect as they've been separated from the rest. No vocal differences,  but they tend to speak more formally. Shuriken and Slingshot.

General: just the basic way of speaking. Vine Staff.

Trivia: can't think of things :(

Playgrounder. A fast language that has too many vowels.

Two dialects.

Splintered Skies: has merged itself slightly with the language of the Gods, as Windforce effects so much of their life.

Craterdust: The older version of the language. The rest of the world sees it as less refined.

Trivia: the two dialects are like Spain Spanish and Mexican Spanish. They began as the same language, but slowly drifted apart due to separation.

Common: couldn't think of a name. It was the language of the Crossroads region, but eventually became the Phighting version of English.

Trivia: Coil is the only Phighter who can't speak it.

HOW VENOMSHANK GOT SYSPHYUS

Tw: suicide but not really. He's not trying to do it on purpose he just doesn't understand that bleach isn't food.

Venomshank was a STUPID child, kept trying to do the over 2000 years ago equivalent of sticking forks into electrical sockets and eating batteries.

Illumina found a crow that couldn't fly and gave it to Venomshank as a thing for him to do that isnt trying to kill himself.

When Venom (mentally around 13) learned he would outlive the bird he started crying and gave it a bit of his power so it wouldn't. But he was also 13.

So Illumina walked in to see Venom missing his wings but the bird now being able to fly and its eyes green, and Venom looking SO proud of himself.

So that's how Venomshank accidentally made a crow sapient and immortal.

Okay i realllyy need to spill this out sooo badly. Familial HyperZuka. Yeah. I thought it would be really sweet :3

Zuka taught Pastlaser a few tricks back when he was young, mostly how to accurately aim and shoot since they are both ranged. B. Zuka seeing him as kid he has to protect, a kid he wants to always take care of but never had time. Pastlaser always see B.Zuka as a really awesome mentor who then became a role model, he had fun being taught a few things by that guy and has brag about it to his friends.

Pastlaser looking and being a little similar to Rocket (mostly the legacy one), and when Zuka moved to Crossroads and adopted Rocket, he was constantly reminded of Pastlaser despite knowing what happened to him.

Zuka being proud of Hyperlaser incredible skills but worries for him alot since he lost very much a chunk of his life. Often asking him questions about his well being when meeting each other occasionally.

This also open up to Rocket-Hyperlaser sibling bonding, I need to think about it.

Pastlaser first meeting B.Zuka when he was 12 and B.Zuka was 26.

I've had alterhumanity on the brain a lot recently so I've decided to make it Phightings problem (AKA some headcanons about how alterhumanity works in the Phighting universe!)

☆Well, first of all, they don't call it that. They've never been humans, silly! They call it alterphernality instead.

☆It's important to note that every Inphernal (regardless of whether or not they're an alterphernal) has what's called a "halfspecies", AKA the animal that their animalistic traits are derived from. For example, Medkit's halfspecies would be a deer. However, most non-alterphernals see their halfspecies as just that, a mere set of related physical traits (and some possible abilities or disabilities), rather than a link to an animal who they are deeply connected with or share behaviors with.

☆Alterphernal terminology functions in a manner that is similar to the way alterhuman terminology functions in the real world; therians involuntarily identify as real animals and occasionally mythical creatures. Otherkin involuntarily identify as mythical creatures, characters, objects, concepts, and occasionally real animals. Otherlinkers voluntarily identify as any of these things. Otherhearteds identify with any of these things. So on and so forth.

☆The one catch is the concept of auto-alterphernality, AKA alterphernality for one's own halfspecies; meaning, a dog Inphernal who identifies as a dog therian is a dog auto-therian, a cat Inphernal who identifies as a cat otherlink is a cat auto-link, etc.

☆There are also transspecies Inphernals! If they are auto-transspecies they don't really need to do much for euphoria physically, they just need to shift their behavior towards that of their chosen species more. However, if they're transspecies towards a different animal or a non-animal being or thing, then they are more likely to alter the traits of their halfspecies to resemble another animal, a mythical creature, or whatever else they may identify as.

Alright, now that I've got all of that out of the way, it's time for the fun part! (Which characters I headcanon as alterphernals) :3

☆Sword is crowhearted

☆Katana is an owl auto-therian but probably does not know this; she may have heard the term before, but she doesn't know enough about it to know that it fits her. She just generally knows herself to be an owl.

☆Rocket is a stegosaurus therian

☆You know how Slingshot canonically uses baking as a hobby to cope? Yeah, he also copinglinks to baking as a concept. It is in fact that deep for him.

☆Hyperlaser doesn't know the term well enough to apply it to themself, but they fit all the criteria required to be considered a black cat copinglink.

☆Boombox is a raccoon therian

☆Subspace is a centipede therian and a robotkin

☆There's gotta be some equivalent to Sanrio in the Phighting universe and Vine Staff has gotta be a fictionkin of whatever it's equivalent of My Melody is. She's also a laptop copinglink because why the hell not!
