Modry Zub, Prague, Czech Republic
It was our last night in Prague and we had had more than out share of fatty meat! We were feeling like a lighter meal, potentially something with some spice as well. In these situations, Thai food was often our go to choice. We went online and found a few possibilities, all within a few blocks of each other. Our first choice was closed because it was Monday so we found our second choice, Modry Zub. Walking in, the atmosphere was stylish and welcoming. We were greeted and taken upstairs to the main dining area. The menu looked interesting and also had some very nice wine options. We chose a light bodied Portuguese red with fresh red berries and a little spice. It was served too warm but we got a chilled ice bucket to bring the temperature to where it belonged. I began with a bowl of tom yum with shrimp, which is generally what I begin with to gauge my Thai experience. The broth was nicely spicy, with a nice number of tender shrimp. The mushrooms were particularly generous and the lemongrass balanced the spiciness very well. It was a very good start to the meal and also went well with the wine we had chosen!! We ordered 2 main courses to share, grapao with pork and a red curry with duck and pineapple. The grapao was definitely not what we expected. We were hoping for a classic spicy Thai basil dish. What we got was a rather bland pork dish that didn't even have any basil. It was disappointing. The duck curry was better, though it was light on the pineapple and was not as spicy as we were hoping for. After beginning well with the soup, the main courses were definitely not great. I'm not sure if we just chose poorly, restaurant or main course, but I would not recommend Modry Zub. We chose 2 classic Thai dishes for our main courses, one was unrecognizable and the other was just okay. Maybe Thai food isnt popular in Prague? I have generally found good Thai food almost everywhere that I have travelled, until now. I learned a good lesson; when in Prague, enjoy the food that they are known for. If you are in Prague and have a taste for Thai food, hold onto that craving until you get to your next destination or back home! Have a great day!!
