How we met: I came across her collection at a fashion event and fell in love with not only the unique jewelry, but also Annette’s fabulous personality!
What do you do for a living and how do you incorporate your love for fashion?
I run a fine jewelry startup business. Fashion to me is just a form of expression of oneself, it's the sartorial extension of a handshake upon first meeting someone. So when I conceptualized the brand (and continue to reinforce it today), I always ask myself: what does the brand stand for and how do I communicate that visually? I am always thinking about that and the answers find themselves in product designs, editorial photos, social media posts, etc.
How did you find your way to jewelry design after working in the corporate world for so long?
I spent 12 years working in finance. In 2013, my husband and I quit our jobs to travel the world for a year. When I was in the world in that way, it forced me to think about how I want to continue to authentically participate in it after the vacation was over. I knew I wanted to get out of finance and do something I was really passionate about. I whittled it down to three things: 1) the Philippines (it's where I was born and raised and such a big part of who I am) 2) Entrepreneurship and businesses with a strong social mission 3) Fashion. But I also really felt strongly about having the conversation with women to slow down their relationship with fashion by buying things they really loved and would hold their intrinsic and emotional value over time. All of those intersected at fine jewelry and hence how I ended up here.
What are your career goals and where you see your brand going?
I have big dreams for our brand to showcase Filipino artisanal skills in other applications outside of fine jewelry. But for short term goals: I want more people to know about the brand and understand and care for it, I want to meet revenue targets so I can keep going and funding this enterprise.
Is there a particular woman entrepreneur that inspires you? Why?
Leila Janah (http://www.leilajanah.com/) is so inspiring to me. She is intelligent, thoughtful and the subject matter expert of her domain but she's so grounded in why she does what she does. And it shows!
What advice would you give a young woman hoping to start business?
Starting a business is hard work, actually, that's probably an understatement. So before getting into it: ask yourself: Are you obsessed with this idea? If you are, go for it. Start small, try it out, and go get it.
Lastly, describe something we wouldn’t otherwise know about you!
I am a total bookworm. Actually, I read everything - magazines, labels on liquid soap bottles - if it's written, I will read it.
