Moenen the One Eye 2025
Moenen plays an important role in the medieval story 'Mariken van Nieumeghen'. He is the devil who seduces Mariken to go with him to Antwerp. They live there together and lead a loose life. When Mariken comes to repentance, Moenen tries to kill her, but it fails. Mariken's sins are ultimately forgiven. The limestone statue of Moenen was designed by Piet Killaars and placed in 1968 on a staircase between Sint Stevenskerkhof and Stikke Hezelstraat. The position in which the statue is placed - Moenen turns his back to the church - needs no further explanation.
