Alternate Universe - Role Reversal

Mogami has a vast experience exorcising spirits, but he's sure he's never met one that got on his nerves so much.

It had a high pitched, piercing laughter.

Sometimes it adopted a humanoid form, and then, if one wasn't looking closely, it almost looked like a very stylish young man. Its face was still crossed in scars, even in this shape, but it could trick any unaware bystander for a few minutes.

Mogami knew better than that. Such was, after all, his job.

“I was just like you” The spirit teased him, graciously avoiding his attacks. “I liked to play around with spirits, as well” It kept going, adorning his words with an unnatural grin, way too toothy for the façade it was trying to keep.

Creepy, Mogami said to himself instead of out loud. He knew he shouldn't engage in conversation with this being.

Not because it would have any real effect on their fight, but because the whole situation was starting to annoy Mogami. It sure was talkative, which wasn't making his work any easier. Encouraging a friendly chat would only be the most effective way to a certain headache.

That wasn't the first time they'd met. It was the first time, though, that he knew the whole time it was a spirit.

On his defense, the club's lights were dim and his own lights were dazed by alcohol. It wasn't a very good defense. But it was true nonetheless, his buzzy brain more than willing to turn a blind eye to the blurriness of that thing's borders, how it seemed to dematerialize and regroup again in a blink. More enticing was the rhythmic sway of those ethereal hips, the mischievous wink that invited him to come closer, closer, and get engulfed by the music.

What the hell… He already got drunk in his pity attempt to unwind; he could use getting to the end of it.

So he did.

Or so he tried.

“I finally get to meet you, mister exorcist” Was whispered on his ear with a metallic-like voice as he reached out to get a hold of its waist.

On its own, that statement wasn't anything out of the ordinary – he had his own TV show after all, and a good amount of fans as well. The shock came when he attempted to get it close to his body, only to find out he was holding onto thin air. He sobered up pretty quickly with that, and he was completely sure he didn't hallucinate the playful smile in front of him before the other faded out.

“I was just like you” it said, a different time. Apparently, it liked to repeat itself. But Mogami didn't comment on that. “I was different, of course, but i was just as wrong.” Oh? “I used to think i could be spirits' friend. Wrong. But you think you can be spirits' enemy, and that isn't right either.” “What should I be, then?” He ended up replying, mostly to cut off the inane chattering, but, deep down, to satiate his growing curiosity.

“Mm, I wonder?” Uncharacteristically, the spirit was brief.

What? What did that even mean? Mogami was about to demand a new answer, but in a blink it had vanished already; off to torment another poor perplexed exorcist, probably.

It had prolonged for too long. The spirit wasn't - couldn't- be more powerful than Mogami, there was no way! But every time they fought, he missed his chance to defeat it, allowing it to slip away and come back to taunt him. It was embarrassingly infuriating, and if his usual exorcising style didn't work, well, he'd have to try something else.

Taking a deep breath, he was the first one to talk, determined to not let himself be interrupted.

"Listen, thing, j-"

"Matsuo"

So much for not being interrupted.

"Huh?"

"It's my name- Matsuo. I won't tell you my given name yet, unless you'd want to be in a first name basis, eh, Keiji-chan? What do you say?"

He blinked, disconcerted. What was this thing's deal?

"Shut up! Just shut up already!” He barked as he realized he was getting caught up in talking again. “Listen, Matsuo, just- stop. You seem reasonable” Mogami grimaced at his own words, but if this would help, then he didn’t mind a lie or two. “So what about you just- haunt someone else? Not my client." His tone bordered on pleading – he couldn't believe he was doing it. Thank whatever god may exist that there weren't cameras around. He truly was desperate, after all. That distracted him enough to not notice the devious grin appearing in Matsuo's face "I don't care what you do, just-"

"Shh" A finger, unnaturally cold, but definitely tangible, pressed against his lips. He froze on his place, and the spirit floated closer. "Say no more! Keiji-chan wants to keep me around, I see!"

"That's not…!" Caught off guard, he couldn't decide on what to complain about first, and ended up losing the chance.

"Shush, I get it! You don't want to exorcise me but you need to do your job, is that so!” Matsuo rubbed Mogami's lower lip while dragging down its finger, making the exorcist shiver “I can roll with that. I'm so happy we got to talk this out!” It bounced in the air in excitement, and before Mogami could say anything else, it winked and vanished, laughing out a final “See you next time!”

Mogami was baffled. Did it really work?

It seemed so, considering that following days passed without incident. His relieved client was generous enough to overlook how long it had taken and even tip him for his services.

Matsuo must have been sincere, then. And if that was the case, that also meant there would be a next time.

Mogami found out that didn't bother him.
