Shalimar Restaurant and the immediate vision is of Bhendi bazaar, where once a full meal used to be around 100/- but then those were the yesteryears, long gone.
They had opened an outpost a while back in Andheri east and we had tried it out; found it good and then it just fell off the radar for a while.
A couple of days ago, a Deepavali boys party, with a couple of members wanting to eat meat only kinda mood, led us back to Shalimar.
We reached pretty late around 10.30 pm and whilst the restaurant was doing good business, there were very few items in the meat section and even the chicken section. However, Chinese was available. This was explained that the Indian food was actually sent from Bhendi bazaar and hence was in limited quantity and did not last beyond 8.30-9 pm everyday.
The meat lovers decided to go for broke and ordered whatever was available – Sheek & Shammi kebab which was just one plate each (4 in a plate) – pretty good with hot roomali rotis, phudina chutney and pyaaz; gurda kaleji, brain masala and mutton masala – all great but a little sweet compared to what they claim to have remembered. This may be due to the advancing age, change in taste or Shalimar cook deciding, but since there was absolutely no talk during the meal, it also proved that the food was great.
The sweet option was Phirni – not too great, looked & tasted a day old; Shahi tukda – pretty nice; Rose falooda which was good.
We wanted a coke or thumsup to wash the food down, but since the group is boycotting USA they do not stock anything except Big cola which is from London. Tried it, pretty good, in fact the non cola drinkers also liked it.
Over all a good evening and definitely a visit again, probably for lunch or early dinner.
Location: Andheri West, Opp. Apna Bazaar Meal: Dinner Food: 8/10 Service: 7/10 Damages: 3000/- for 5 people including cola

Persian Darbar
Nothing entices my taste buds as does Moghlai food. Cooked in aromatic spices and fresh herbs, the flavours linger in your mouth even after you are done eating. Persian Darbar is a perfect deal for Moghlai, North Indian, Tandoori and Chinese cuisine. We’d been a number of times to their branch on the Linking Road, Bandra West to devour their ever-famous Dum Biryani. And each time I passed by the…
