Burden of Truth 2x02; Salesmen, Cheats and Liars
If you haven’t met them yet: Luna is an indigenous queer girl played by an indigenous queer actress (Star Slade) and her girlfriend is Molly, high school soccer star who becomes ill and develops disabilities. Molly is played by Sara Thompson who had to deal when she was younger with some of the disabilities she plays on tv.
Their sexuality isn’t used as a plot device by the show. They are just a teenager couple who has to learn how to deal with everything that’s going on, be there for each other and yet be their own selves.
Burden do Truth is a TV Show with strong female characters from different cultures and ethnicities. Season 2 just started and you can catch them at CBS and The CW.

How I wish the writers had used Molly in season 2 of Burden of Truth.
(spoilers for the season so anyone who plans to watch the show/season but hasn’t yet STOP READING)
I’ve seen people say that Molly’s character was ruined in the later half of the season and I wouldn’t go THAT far but it did feel like they didn’t know what to do with her and so chose to exclude her entirely (despite how that didn’t make sense for her character).
And honestly it wouldn’t even have taken much to have Molly make sense without interfering with any of the other stories.
First of all the break up actually made sense. It was a really painful scene but Luna’s motives were sound and both Slade and Thompson played the scene beautifully, there is absolutely nothing I would change about that moment.
The problem was the follow up, or more specifically the lack thereof.
Because Luna wasn’t just Molly’s girlfriend, she’s also her friend. They grew up knowing each other, they love each other. A breakup wouldn’t have made Molly leave town while Luna was fighting a murder charge.
And they honestly just needed to change 1 scene and add 3 more to fix the mistake they made in the later half of the season.
They could have added a moment where Molly talked with Billy about Luna, asked him how she could help (basically paralleling it with how Luna showed up asking to assist Joanna and Billy last season when it was Molly that needed the help).
And yes, obviously unlike Luna, being a lawyer isn’t something that would be in Molly’s nature.
But when Billy needed help to go through the potential jury members he just would have had to ask for Molly’s help as well as Diane’s. That’s it. There obviously not a lot else she could have done to help with Luna’s case, but that? That she could have done.
Then just an additional scene where Molly showed up to have an argument with Taylor because Taylor was now a witness against Luna.
And then a moment after Luna was exonerated between the two of them. They wouldn’t even have needed to get back together, because despite Luna’s intentions what she did would have hurt Molly and earlier in the season Luna was already feeling a distance between them. So they could have had a quick word about both those things and then dealt with fixing their relationship (or deciding that they didn’t want to) next season.
And that’s it. Everything else is the same but Molly didn’t vanish off the face of the earth to go suntanning by the beach and everything is still both in character and within the logical capabilities of what the character could actually do.
