My favourite food in Singapore...
Tahu Tempe and rice. Ta!Ra! Not a secret here that I'm a sucker for fried food! It's a dish consisting of marinated Tofu and fermented Soybean cake deep fried to perfection, served along with some green veggies and salad of raw cucumber and cabbage and some very very hot and spicy pickle. This is sprinkled with a lot of something that looks like batter bits and seem like a mix of different things that I cannot figure out what.
You should mind the pickle like me ( I add just a wee bit to every spoonful) if you're not used to hot food and I do not use the word 'hot' here lightly. It does starts to give a kick with the very first spoon. But then again, I would not leave it out completely as it is one of the signature components here. All in all this is a mind blowing combination of flavours and texture that has appealed to the foodie in me.

I have tried this in a couple of eateries but no one does this better than Ayam Panyet Ria. Some friends introduced me to this restaurant as soon as we moved here to Singapore and it was love at first bite! I have been going back for more almost once every month. And no, I have not been sponsored or paid for this post. I simply love the food there. So much so that it's almost a torture right now for me to look at these pictures and write about it... I can almost feel the taste in my mouth!
And this is kind of ironic because being a vegetarian, there's actually not much for me. There's just 3 things in the menu that I can order. But hey! these are 3 dishes I could swear by. But if you are a very strict vegetarian I would not recommend this place to you. There's probably some belachan- shrimp paste in almost everything.
At this point let me explain that I have been a vegetarian by choice for almost 20+ years now. I have never craved for any kind of meat or sea food. But since leaving Nepal I hoped that I could bring myself to eat some or at least one non- vegetarian food as it would make my life so much easier. And in all fairness there's so much gastronomic experiences if only I was game! So I played with that idea for a while but I have failed to change my food preferences. As it seems that I am to be committed to my vegetarian life I do not think beyond that now. But at the same time I do leave my options open... like daring myself to eat here where there's a hint of non vegetarianism even in veggie food (vegetarians please stop rolling your eyes).
This restaurant is located in different locations in Singapore. I mostly go to the one in Lucky Plaza in Orchard as I can kill two birds with one stone by having lunch there and then do my shopping before returning home.
'Ayam Penyet Ria' looks pretty basic. Not much in terms of interiors. I drop in just for the awesome food they serve rather than the ambience. All the food there is very moderately priced. When I'm alone I usually suffice with less than 10 SGD for a meal and the bill comes to around 20-25 SGD when I'm dining with a friend. At this cost I guess you can't ask for more. And most importantly, it looks and feels clean and hygienic.
Service is fast, I've hardly waited more than 10 minutes for the food... except when I order the Inoki Mushrooms. That usually takes a little bit longer. But other than that, go in hungry, eat, come out feeling rather satisfied... all within 30 minutes or less. And the best part- you just had a great meal and still have enough in left your pocket for the shopping (wink!!!)
Vegetable salad served with peanut sauce dressing. I was surprised that this is served moderately warm in contrast to the cold salads I had been used to. Maybe that is why I feel like it could a proper meal in itself if I were not sharing this with anyone else. It's a rather filling mix of boiled Potaoes, egg, moyashi, cucumber, lettuce, cabbage, beans etc in lots of peanut dressing and topped with two different variety of crackers. I was not so impressed the first time that I tried it but it's kind of grown into my system since then. Needless to say I really enjoy eating this now.
Let me tell you that this by far the tastiest Enoki mushroom dish that has gone in my mouth! Again the extra-ordinary flavour of the batter and the consistency and form of the mushroom have worked so well together. I know it's a lot of fried stuff but there's no resisting here and this is the last of my choice of vegetarian food!!!
Smashed Pomfrey served with Tahu Tempe, salad and Rice. This is what my mom-in-law ordered during one of our visit.
The smashed fried chicken is the signature dish of this restaurant and I believe it's most popular for this. I cannot say if it is indeed as delicious as people say it is (for all the non veg food on the menu) but looking at the large flow of customers I see every time I go to eat here I think I it's worth a visit if you haven't been there or you're visiting Singapore. I like to squeeze in a meal there when I have visitors from abroad if they prefer this kind of food. After all it is my favourite!!!
